What's With the USPS and Knives?

I have shipped hundreds of knives by US Express Mail and never have I had a loss or a problem. It will cost a few extra bucks for the shipping but the knives almost always get to the customer the next day. If the package is not delivered on time the post office will give you a full refund for the postage.

Post Office theft of knives is rampant. There are several companies that even request that you use alternate names for them (ones that don't include the word 'knives') when mailing things back to them. Bark River requests that you use BRKT instead of spelling it out. All due to theft. I recently had to mail a package back to a knife vendor, the USPS counter attendant had me change the company's name on the shipping label to exclude the word 'knives' from the company's name.

Other companies that make valuable items have caught on to that too. All of the packages I've recieved from Oakley had the return address labeled "JK Distribution."

Makers, dealers and/or collectors can buy insurance from Collectibles Insurance Services (formerly CIA). Your knives can be fully insured at home, while being transported or shipped/mailed. http://www.collectinsure.com/cost.html

The first year I had my collection insured with CIA, my premium for complete coverage was less than I had spent in just postal/shipping insurance the previous year.

I had a Jay Hendrickson knife stolen from my checked luggage on the way back from the ABS Reno Show three years ago, and I received a check for full value within 30 days of reporting the claim.

CKCA members also get a discount off their premium.

Like Kevin, I also use the Collectibles Insurance Services. Good peace of mind.

I have shipped thousands of packages through the US Post Office in the last 15+ years. with only one lost (wasn't a knife). Knifemaking supplies go Priority and knives go Express Mail.

I have had probs with both UPS and Fed-Ex...
