So I just can't do it. I don't like medium to large fixed blades. I want to like them but when I go camping they're dead weight to me. Seems that anything bigger then an Izula and it goes unused. I went camping this last weekend and my Koster was just in the way. Tomahawk, sure used the crap out of it. SAK Soldier, yep that got some action. Koster Bushcraft, left it in the tent. Sad really because I love fixed blades. Anyone else stop using 3" plus bladed fixed blades or am I a weird knife nut who loves something he hates?

IMO, the tomahawk and med/large fixed blades fill the same role. If you want to give the larger fixed blade a shot, try using it instead of the tomahawk for those tasks.

Bud, it seems to me you answered your thoughts and wants. If the tommy hawk works for ya and you like it then stay with it, if it ain't broke do not worry about. small knife and hawk is a great combo.
Where I live and for spring, summer and fall a small knife and a larger knife is just awesome. winter a axe and a smaller knife is the way to go.

Use what you like and be happy with it:D.

Now that I have thought about it some I do think there something wrong with ya:eek::D

Just kidding,

Bryan

I hardly ever used my fixed blade knives, so I sold them all pretty much. Now I have some really tough folders and a wetterlings hunters axe.

Nothing wrong with ya, you found what works in your static environment. Just make sure you're not being influenced by normalcy bias.

Good point..... but if I may ask..... what is THAT. Depending on WHERE you are the choice of tools will vary. Also..... the persons skill level I.E. (use of machete, hatchet, axe, large fixed blade) will most assuredly vary from person to person. Yes?????

I think he means not carrying a large knife because of what others think. And no that ain't the issue. My unkempt beard and Nessmuk tattoo pretty much sums up my feelings on what others think. :D

okkkkkk Well then I guess I'm lost. I thought your ??? was (do you need a fixed blade) sorry If I was off. My answer was NO....... you don't. Depending on what you normally carry I.E. saw..... axe.... a folder will do just fine. I LOVE a good fixed blade but honestly from MY OWN EXPERIENCE a good hatchet and a SAK will do.

Personally , I dont think there is anything wrong with you .
I used to use a tomahawk for most of what I needed to do for a while , then I got hands on a big blade and decided I should learn to use it , I was influenced a lot to do this because a friend I have uses pretty much only his old martindale for everything ... parked the tomahawk , and went with the big blade for ages .. but for literally decades before that , just a folder .
End result tho ... when it come to camping , everyone is waiting for me while Im looking at my blades trying to decide what I feel like taking .... My wife says Im worse than a woman picking a handbag .

I thought I was odd for coming to the exact opposite conclusion as you.... turns out I'm just odd because I use lead based paint in my coffee.

It's cool man, you gotta listen to that little voice in your head. For example as insane as it sounds, my little voice tells me that I don't like SAK's. This is despite the fact that logically I know they are monumentally useful and know of many times where I wish I had one in hand instead of my phat bob folder. But y'know what? I friggin' LOVE my phat bob folder, and SAK's leave me cold, so to heck with it. That's just me, and I'm cool with me.

I like large fixed blades a lot more than small ones... I use them more, too. So, I am sorta the opposite as you.. but I do use the little ones, too.

I like fixed blades, but I don't NEED them. When I am doing actual work and cutting tasks, I am using a folder or
Multitool most of the time. If I am using a fixed blade, it is usually because I have deliberately chosen to use one out of a sense of pleasure, not because it is absolutely necessary. I also Find blades longer than four inches to be cumbersome.

Of course, I found myself shopping Beckers last night . . .;)

Nessmuk tattoo? That's excellent!

Ther is nothing wrong with you. You just came up with a solution that works for you. Now its your preference.

I comes down to what activities you do. I used to backpack during fire restrictions, I'd take my bivy sack, and a stove to cook with, and my Leatherman Wave to open my Mountain House dinners. That Leatherman worked for those situations.
On my next trip, I plan on having a fire, maybe the stuff will be wet. I'll need to do more chopping and collecting of tinder, I'll be taking more than my Leatherman for sure.
I forsee the trip being wet, if not rain, at least humidity and dew. I'll be taking kydex, not leather, and probably something in between a machete and a chopper, Junglas and a BK-2 seems like the ticket.
Shotgun, if it would make you feel better, I'll send you my address so you can relieve yourself of those fixed blades. One should not suffer in such a manner.

Ha. Same on both counts. When I use a fixed blade it's just so I can use my fancy toy, not because I need it. I'm also waiting for the magnum camp tweener to come out. LOL

There's always one. :D Have too much into them to give them away but I'll probably thin the heard a little down the road. Tho now I think of it the only fixed blades I have over 3 inches is my Koster Bushcraft and BHK machete.
