What's you opinion on cold steel?

My thoughts?

Good quality for the price.
Strong, reliable knives.
Crazy marketing.
They do AUS8 right.

All of the above. I like both the Recon-1 And AK-47. I carry the latter more simply because I can't get the thumb stud changed to the left side on my Recon-1. That isn't too big a deal because there is still enough sticking out on the left side, just wish I could change it... can't seem to even with pliers.

Hank, why would they do that to you? That is a rip off XD. And yes I do agree the marketing is a bit over the too as well, but it seemed like a good knife or at least a beater for the money. And of course with my luck now people are reccomend in the ak-47, now I might need both

I have the Spartan, Voyager XL, Code-4, and Recon-1. I would repeat each of the purchases again. Very good Knives. I don't think you will be dissappointed should decide to own one, or more of CS's offerings.

Seeing this thread reminded me that, aside from a Katana Machete and GI Tanto bought strictly out of curiosity, I have very little Cold Steel representation in my little collection. I have an SRK fixed blade and Recon 1 folder, and both are tantos because that has always been my favorite blade shape aesthetically, and CS does the tanto design right in my opinion. I had actually intended to get the previous-gen Recon 1 that had the thumb bar/disc instead of thumb studs, but for better or worse, what showed up in my mailbox was the newer style with studs.

Since then, I haven't bought another CS knife, simply because other manufacturers are offering knives at comparable prices that appeal to me more in one way or another. For me, Kershaw is my go-to "high value" brand, followed by SOG, but I haven't given up on CS by any means.

Nothing wrong with cold steel. Me and the company have sort of "come full circle"... When I was a poor redneck kid they were like the best knives evar! Then I turned my nose up at them for quite a while thinking the designs were hokey and the materials were second rate. Now I just think they make good no nonsense tough knives that are an excellent bargain for the money. If I were you I'd go with the recon 1. I have several and they are great knives.

I have a 97KMS Kukri Machete that cost about $20. It took about 3-4 hours of sharpening to get a workable edge on it, But it hacks brush like a champ. I don't own any of their folders though. Always considered them kinda "..meh" I use a Para2 as my beater and it's still in great shape after a year. s30v > AUS8

$120 > $55

That Triad Lock is among the best in the business. Can you imagine a D2 Spartan or an S30V Recon 1......... WOW!

Cold steel american lawmen and strip the black, sand down the g10.

Awesome knife for the money if you want a big ol beater.

$120 > $55

Damn - beat me to it!!! And here, let me fix it for you brother:

$120 > $39.45

That's right! $39.45 on the big river website.... And BTW Southpaw - Cold Steel's AUS8 is pretty good chit. I'd say the Recon is just about the best $40 folder you can buy.

I've got both of the CS Tuff Lites (reg and mini) and love 'em both. Great knives for whittling at a very reasonable price. I also have a Mini Tac Skinner that was given to me. No complaints but nothing to rave about either. Decent knife.

My problem is that CS doesn't make much that really turns my crank. But if I saw something that interested me, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. :)

I haven't come across any Cold Steel knives that appeal to me so far. I've obviously heard the praises of the Tri-Ad lock, but the designs and AUS-8 are lost on me.

i wish they'd bring the old voyager (the one that looks like a buck 110.) that, in addition to the carbon steel trailmaster and the original tanto, are CS' best designs.

Another cool aspect of Cold Steel is that they aren't afraid to really go for it in regard to knife size and interesting\unusual products.

honesty.... They make decent knives but they are not the best they are
Not the worlds Strongest Sharpest Knives but they are ok there is better brands
Out there with better warranty and use better steel etc. the thing that
Bothers me the most is they are not made in USA if
That does not bother you then your fine.

ZTD.

Great knives!!! not to pricey and awesome designs steel snobs will tell you that aus-8 sucks but cold steel's aus-8 is tough and holds an edge OK but takes it well too!!! i love cold steel and in between them and spyderco you dont need much else :) if you like them go for it you wont be disappointed

Just stay away from the serrations. They are tiny, foul quickly with debris of whatever you're cutting, and you will come to hate them. If you go with a plain AUS8A blade from CS, you won't have trouble sharpening it whenever you cut something abrasive like rope or other tough fiber. Also avoid the "tanto" point. It's cool looking but limited in use unless you want to stab a person or penetrate a car hood. Whichever CS folder you pick, you're really only getting a different knife in the handle design. Many of the blade shapes are nearly identical from one line to another. They all lock up strong and last a good long time. Unlike a Buck 110 or 112, however, they begin to show their age before their time. A well-used CS folder LOOKS well-used: they don't clean up all that well in my experience.

But they can cut and stand the abuse!

I've got both of them. I happen to like the wave disk on the ak-47 though and it feels great in my hand. Either knife will perform well!

the love of sharpening a chete with a file.4 hours? is that all. shoot try a stock tramontina. elbow greeze. But I find once you got it sharp .just follow the shiny line.

I like some CS neck knives too. they get the job done. I like aus8 though.
