What's your comfort zone ?

It used to be WAY up there, in the thousands, but now I won't spend more than 500, usually no more than 350. I just hit the point when you realize that the knives way up at that price point, are not all that different than the ones below 500, or even much much lower than that. And I have been leaning towards more balanced knives and steels too. Not exotic, just something that does everything really well.

I have not read the whole thread, but I wonder if anyone else thinks like this. I'm willing to spend about 6 hours gross wage on a knife, for me that runs about 150$, It would have to be pretty special for me to go to a full day. That said, I have to really think about anything less than 5, because I don't want to nickle and dime myself out of my knife budget.

Yikes... This year has shown me that 800 isn't enough for a fixed... (Keffeler)
Lol, OOOH yeah :) What model may I ask ?
Next year will at least one nice fixed blade. I've been trying score this knife by
Peter Kohler for almost a year but I'm never fast enough.

While I've spent somewhat short of a grand on a couple Shiros, I haven't gone over $500 for a while now. I'd say that under 3 hundred is my "comfort zone" where I'll spend without much angst and to try something out. 3 to 5 entails more consideration for "do I really want that?", but no worries if the knife is from a trusted/beloved maker like CRK or RHK. Most of my purchases are off the Exchange, but I do pick up a few new as well.

Just got back into buying... never stopped using or carrying. At the time my most expensive knife I ever purchased was a Rick Hinderer Fire Tac Extreme... that was 525. I think I still basically have a 500 limit. Comfort zone use to be around 175 to 250. The other day I just recently stepped out of that zone... The ZT 0850 really caught my eye and I couldn't fight it anymore so 320 it is. I don't buy too often... It really has to appeal to me one way or another... carry for work and use or carry because I want something nice looking to play with and show it off a little.

100.00 and below.. Will squeak to 150.00 once in a while.. But try to stay below 100.00.. John

$275 for me. Anything over that and I feel the increase in performance per/$ seriously starts to diminish.

I feel most comfy in the 2-250 range (for a fixed blade) I have and use a couple 300 customs that I have no problem using either. I also have Esees and Beckers in the ~100 price bracket that I use and love too.

I prefer folders in the 80-175 range and own some 3-400 folders as well but I don't use those ones for hard use and don't have any folders on my list over $150 anymore.

$80 max for a fixed blade. $150 for a folder. I feel yucky if I go over.
BD-1, 440C, 154CM, VG-10, and $35VN are my favorite steels.
I've recently been into inexpensive imports with 5Cr15Mov, 1095, and AUS-8A steels. All in the $20-$30 range.

In 2010 I bought a Troodon for $284. It broke after 12 openings.

I'm very comfortable in the $2-300 range for folders. I would have no issues going to $450 or $500 if it's something I really want like a Sebenza or similar quality. Above $500 and I'll need to justify to the wife why I'm buying knives that cost more than her pistol. I don't like explaining my purchases because I usually find that its hard to justify a price point that exceeds the point of diminishing returns. That takes all the fun out of a big purchase lol
