I vote for the mutts of the world but I love all dogs. I'm definitely a dog person.

Save a dogs life. You'll get so much more in return. Visit www.petfinder.com or your local rescue. There are a lot of great dogs out there that have been abandoned that are more then happy to devote their life to you. They truly are Man's Best Friend. It's amazing how in tune you can become with a good dog.

My wife and I rescued a very young Akita mix a couple years ago and it's turned out to be the most loyal & intelligent dog I've ever owned. And I've had 5 other dogs myself over the years. On top of that I've been around many other dogs since a couple family members have been breeding them for years, mainly Rotts and Dobes. Not to mention all of my friend's dogs. My little guy is about 70 pounds of solid muscle and goofy friendly if he knows you and darn aloof and alert if he doesn't. It takes him a while to accept strangers. He won't even accept food from strangers. He just turns his head away...and salivates. :) He only gets wound up if someone attempts to "bother" the wife. He places his body between her and whatever he views as the threat and stands there and stares it down. Once your accepted into his "inner circle" you've just opened yourself up to some serious loving. Nothing like a 70 pound lapdog that just wants a belly rubbing and a good game of fetch or tug. Or he may just want to relax on the couch next to you with his head in your lap. Not to mention I walk him a minimum of twice a day (1/2 hour @ 5 Am and a 1/2 in the evening) and we go hiking most weekends. Without a doubt, he's part of the family. It'll kill me when he passes. I'll lose my best friend. I'm sure I'll have to take a couple days off of work to give him a proper burial and get my head straight.

We live out in the country with a few acres of land. I'm fencing it in this year and then running an invisible dog fence on the outside perimeter of the chain link fence (with a wooden slat fence outside the chain link fence to hide the chain link) to keep them from digging under the fences or getting close enough to jump it. My own private penitentiary. :D After that is completed I think I'm going to start fostering other rescued dogs. Which, knowing me and my wife, means we'll be adopting them for ourselves after we fall for them. I'm not sure we'll be able to give the foster dogs up after we bond. I'm a sucker when it comes to animals. I've begun work on turning our heated garage into a huge dog dorm with a dog door in the back concrete wall and the door to the house from the garage so they can come and go as they please into the yard and the house. I know what your thinking, how pathetic! :D

What can I say... "The more people I meet, the more I like my dog."

Can you tell I don't have kids? :D

My vote is for the sporting breeds, specifically, well bred Spaniels, more specifically Springers and Brittanys.

Hi All-

My vote would have been for "hounds" and specifically Rhodesian Ridgebacks if we want to be particular. This is a dog that I've wanted for two decades and just now have the home that can accomodate one.

Earlier in my life I've had a black Labrador Retriever and a brindle Pit Bull that were both fantastic pets. The LR lived to nearly sixteen years of age and the PB made it to about ten years. I miss them both dearly.

My Rhodesian is my 90 pound baby. She's a handful though.

Can't beat Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I'll like to have one as a member of the family within a few years. Fabulous breed. I've been checking rescues to see if one turns up that would fit into the household. What a great breed. My friend used to have a Ridgeback/Staffordshire Terrier mix and it was a joy to be around. I think I miss it as much as he does since it's passed.
