What's Your EDC Dealbreaker?

Present deal breakers as far as carry goes (folders only)? Partially serrated blades, generally dislike titanium or metal scales in general, not a fan of tanto type blades, excessively heavy folders (example Buck 110), and flippers, don''t care for automatic knives.

I might buy an automatic knife, but I doubt I would ever carry it.

This sounds silly and superficial. It will probably antagonize all Spydie fans. That's absolutely NOT the intention. Every one of us has quirks about our knives, some rational, some not. This is one of my "nots."

I can't take a knife out of my pocket and feel like it's a bird looking back at me.

Tried it. Can't do it.

What you don't like birds or something?

If knife is too small. It still can be my toy for flicking or edc at home but not outside. I don't want to drop it into snow or mud while trying to grab it out of pocket.

NO Twenty thou on more behind the edge
and or
NO over about three mm at the spine.

Going into battle that's a diff thing . . . I'm just going to town.

Ha, ha I would like to say no tantos and no partial serrateds but the other day I had to cut open a bag of gravel and I thought : What the heck knife do I want to subject to THAT ? ? ? . . .

I grabbed my Gerber Remix Tactical (all of $18) and headed out the door. Turns out even though the tanto on it was pretty sharp ~ scrape-shave sharp it wasn't up to cutting the burlap like plastic bag (without getting western with it and banging into the gravel ). I grabbed a corner of the bag and took the serrated to it and bingo. I do that about once every four years though so . . .

This

but NEVER this

No one factor is enough to be a dealbreaker for me - it's usually a combination of two or more factors which often constitutes a dealbreaker.

Some examples include:

Tip down oriented clips with a flipper deployment. The manipulation needed to get into deployment position is one of the most awkward of any configuration.

Chisel grind combined with a tanto blade. Chisel grinds by themselves I can make adjustments in my cutting technique for, same applies for tantos. But on the same blade, it is too much for me as I have other options available.

I have to have an EDC folder that is one hand open, one hand closed

Now that you mention it, if it's over 5oz, tanto, partially serrated, tip down only or assisted I probably won't take a second look.

Tantos are out
Serrations are out
Heavy is out
Rough or too grippy scales when I'm reaching in my pocket for something else.
Clipped knives go in my right front pockets
Non-Clipped go in my left rear pocket so those tend to be a bent thinner or a small fixed blade in a sheath

Won't EDC if:

  • Too big
  • Too wide
  • Too thick
  • Too heavy
  • Too flashy/colorful/ostentatious
  • No clip
  • No one-handed open/close
  • Not stainless steel blade
  • Detent is so weak whereby folder opens in pocket
  • Uncomfortable to carry or hold

I have enjoyed this thread. Commies, birds. What a fun bunch. So glad I signed up.

No serrations
bad ergos or handle too small to feel confident
High carrying pocket clip

TI/G10 is something I'm simply not into.
Pocket clips where a large portion of the knife is sticking out. Knife always seems to get caught on something
Finger choil. The knife is already small and controlable, don't need to make the cutting edge less
Weak detent/weak lockup. Had a knife open in my pocket, not fun. If I can overpower the lock with thumb pressure, its not for me.
Serrations

LOL! the Benchmade 910 Styker that I carried today is literally the physical manifestation of everyone's deal breakers according to this thread (tanto blade, partially serrated, and tip-down carry only!) :D

In no particular order:

1. A weak detent - more of a safety concern for me.

2. Bad ergonomics - anything that doesn't feel right in my large sized hands.

4. Partial serrations on a blade less than 3.5" or so (on a folder).

5. Stainless steel handle scales - too slick!

6. Carbon fiber handle scales - they just don't do anything for me aesthetically.

7. Anything UNDER 2.5 ounces - super light weight knives always seem to wiggle their way out of my pocket.

8. Blade play, bad blade centering, etc.

9. Wire pocket clips...

I know, I know, I'm in the minority, but I can't stand them! In my experience, they always snag and and get bent out of shape, and they create horrible hot spots in my hand (which is why I got rid of my Spyderco Techno).
