What's your EDU?

My EDC's are also EDU's; the task at hand determines the EDC I choose to U. They are:
-BM 511 Griptilian D2
-Schrade 1080T, American made with carbon blades.
The BM gets the dirty or tough jobs and the Schrade slipjoint opens mail, cuts food, and so forth. It's a very functional pair :thumbup:

I'm really wondering now if people are carrying "pocket queens," or if they're just carrying a beater and a nice knife.

Why scratch up the blade of a nice knife cutting up a gritty cardboard box, stripping wire, or other generally "dirty" cutting tasks?

A very good point!!:thumbup::D:thumbup:

If I buy it and it goes in my pocket it is in no sense a beater...none of my knives are beaters , a beater is one you don't care about , I happen to carry about anything I drop my $$ on.

Doesn't mean they won't get used for what I need , it just means none of them will be beat on with a hammer or any other object. They all will be used to cut stuff.

Two of these four have been leaving the house with me everyday for the last six months. Every now and then I toss in something different just for fun. But these (4) are work horses!!!! ~baba~

I use a Mantis MF-1 Prybar, and MF-4 Chaos. They are both great knives for the money. They are 420HC, which I know a lot of people don't think is all that great. But they hold an edge pretty good, and they are tough. I've done a lot of testing on them, and I can't do any damage, other than scuffing the black coating. I really like the style too, I just think they look cool.

I also use a Cold Steel Mini Tanto, which was my edc until I got the Mantis knives. I still use it on occasion.

My EDC has changed from an Emerson Folding Karambit to a Spyderco Military just in case the SHTF. The EDU is still a trusty Case 6.5 Peanut.

I carry 2 EDUs -- a large regular Sebenza, and a Vic Deluxe Tinker. I reach for the Sebenza first 'cause it's so easy, but if the job is better with a different tool, or the environment isn't quite as knife-friendly, I'll take the extra effort to use the Vic.

...So what level do you rank in the Mantis Militia?

I hope the muscle memory thing does not screw up ppl who are carrying one knife to use and one for, um, potentially using. In IDPA and USPSA local shoots I figured out quickly that when you under the clock (thankfully, instead of under the gun) you tend to revert to a certain behavioral pattern which whatever you would normally do most often.

I guess what I am trying to say is that carrying two knives, one you don't really use, you may default to the one you use frequently do to location etc.

I do not want to admit just how many completltly (spl?) different folder designs have had anywhere from 4 hours to a couple of days of carry/use time over the last 8 months or so - but- I believe that even ignoring self defence use - having one knife you use every day is a big deal in terms of training muscle memory. After a few months - it just works for you without much thought at all about what you're asking it to do.( and I'm getting close to making that descision (spl?))
Second point on this is that i have been pretty frequently searched by the Police. Since I've always carried a knife for the last 50 years - they would find whatever I was using at the time - never any great excitement ( worst case - one cop would hold onto it while they ran me thru the NCIS - I'm uninteresting - so back the tool would come ) and off I'd go. Gotta say - it may be your God given right and constituionaly protected - but the average cop hauls more than one knife off of you and he/she is going to get interested - this is not what you want - you want bored or at least as bored as any rational LE type is going to get on a stop and frisk. Worth thinking about?
