My first Fiddleback was a Bushfinger, then a Hunter and a Kephart. At the time I was most interested in finding a good Bushcrafting and Camping blade. I wasn't really focused on the smaller models. I had been collecting Spyderco folders for a little while previously and have carried a SAK or a Leatherman every day since I was a kid. But then I started noticing the EDKardas, Runts, Hiking Buddies and it all changed. I went from carrying a folder everyday to carrying a Fiddleback everyday and selling off most of my Spyderco collection.
So let's see and hear about the Fiddlebacks you carry everyday. How do you use them? What do you look for in one that'll be either in your pocket, on your belt or around your neck all day long?
For me, EDC means opening mail, cutting up boxes, getting me into those stupid clamshell packaging, cutting up an apple everyday, my dinner knife and whatever my wife needs when she asks "can I borrow your knife?" (She needs her own she just won't admit it yet). They also get used when I need a break from the grind. I'll sit at my desk and work on a try stick or make a feather stick or whatever. Yes, I keep a stack of sticks at my desk. And constantly have to clean the floor from the shavings. I look for thinner blades, 1/8" or 3/32", for an EDC knife. Tapered vs SFT vs FT doesn't really matter to me at the size since prolonged usage isn't the norm.
I'll start with a couple from my current rotation - my first small Fiddleback and the most recent.
EDKarda
The EDKarda (also called the EDK) was the small Fiddie that got me started. Its functional little blade and decent sized handle is what drew me to it initially. Being able to carry it in pocket or on the belt prompted me to talk to Rick Lowe about a sheath with a pocket clip. Since I pocket carry left front (knives, keys and wallet are always LFP. Phone has been in RFP on its own ever since I've had one and I'm told old to change my ways) and belt carry on the right, it works out great.
RLO's sheaths are perfect for EDC.
My typical pocket dump:
Some usual usage:
Karda
I jumped on this Karda a couple weeks back for a couple reasons. The new design really looked good. I liked the blade design of the original Karda, but the handle wasn't doing it for me. The new one with the shorter but beefier handle looked to be a great combo. Second, I've recently decided that I'm going to focus on wood handles for my smaller EDC knives and Shadetree and Micarta for the larger knives. The Bocote Karda fit the bill perfect.
This will be wearing some RLO pants soon. In the meantime, it's been getting put to use on my work at home days. In 3/32" it's a mean slicer.
