What's your Everyday Fiddleback?

My first Fiddleback was a Bushfinger, then a Hunter and a Kephart. At the time I was most interested in finding a good Bushcrafting and Camping blade. I wasn't really focused on the smaller models. I had been collecting Spyderco folders for a little while previously and have carried a SAK or a Leatherman every day since I was a kid. But then I started noticing the EDKardas, Runts, Hiking Buddies and it all changed. I went from carrying a folder everyday to carrying a Fiddleback everyday and selling off most of my Spyderco collection.

So let's see and hear about the Fiddlebacks you carry everyday. How do you use them? What do you look for in one that'll be either in your pocket, on your belt or around your neck all day long?

For me, EDC means opening mail, cutting up boxes, getting me into those stupid clamshell packaging, cutting up an apple everyday, my dinner knife and whatever my wife needs when she asks "can I borrow your knife?" (She needs her own she just won't admit it yet). They also get used when I need a break from the grind. I'll sit at my desk and work on a try stick or make a feather stick or whatever. Yes, I keep a stack of sticks at my desk. And constantly have to clean the floor from the shavings. I look for thinner blades, 1/8" or 3/32", for an EDC knife. Tapered vs SFT vs FT doesn't really matter to me at the size since prolonged usage isn't the norm.

I'll start with a couple from my current rotation - my first small Fiddleback and the most recent.

EDKarda

The EDKarda (also called the EDK) was the small Fiddie that got me started. Its functional little blade and decent sized handle is what drew me to it initially. Being able to carry it in pocket or on the belt prompted me to talk to Rick Lowe about a sheath with a pocket clip. Since I pocket carry left front (knives, keys and wallet are always LFP. Phone has been in RFP on its own ever since I've had one and I'm told old to change my ways) and belt carry on the right, it works out great.

RLO's sheaths are perfect for EDC.

Karda

I jumped on this Karda a couple weeks back for a couple reasons. The new design really looked good. I liked the blade design of the original Karda, but the handle wasn't doing it for me. The new one with the shorter but beefier handle looked to be a great combo. Second, I've recently decided that I'm going to focus on wood handles for my smaller EDC knives and Shadetree and Micarta for the larger knives. The Bocote Karda fit the bill perfect.

This will be wearing some RLO pants soon. In the meantime, it's been getting put to use on my work at home days. In 3/32" it's a mean slicer.

The ED Karda is my EDC Fiddleback. Right now, I'm EDC'ing a knife from another maker, but when I carry a Fiddleback, it's the ED Karda.

My EDC's right now vary between either a tapered tang EDKarda or TT Sneaky Pete.

"Another maker"!?!? Whaat!

The fixed knife I carry on a daily basis is another maker's. I'd love to have a Fiddleback in a similar size range (5 1/2 overall w/ a 2 1/2" blade), but I don't think there is one. Although if someone could do a size comparison thread with all the smaller models that would be greatly appreciated. Sometimes its hard to judge the actual size in a photo.

I'll do a full on comparo of my EDCs when I have light and time, but here's a quicky in the dark of a couple that might work for you that are close to that size:

The Karda I mention above and the Runt:

When I had my runt I found myself desiring a longer blade. The Palmer looks perfect for the job, but they're too rare. The Karda is my go to in the mean time. If I can grab a 2 finger Karda and a slim fit sheath I might have gold!

Thanks thurin! That's very helpful. Do you have a Hiking Buddy or a Bushraptor to compare them to? Here's my current EDC in between those FF models (sorry for the crappy phone pic).

I'll do a full set with better light tomorrow hopefully.

Please do Nathan. I'm looking forward to seeing some in hand pics of that 2 Finger Fat Karda in your bear paws. :D

Am I the only one who's surprised that Bud's EDC is not a Runt?!

My EDC is a slipjoint, but out of the fixed blades I carry the EDK or EDCII most often.

Due to Norwegian knife laws I only carry a Fiddleback when out of the city and then it is normally a Recluse or Ladyfinger. I carry a folder (Spyderco) for anything smaller than 3.5"

I'm also surprised with all his Runt's that they're not Bud's EDC.

EDK seems to be a popular choice.

Are you able to carry locking spydies or do you have to deal with UK like slip joint laws? My offer still stands, if you're ever out here, we'll hit Spyderco HQ together.

Swiss law doesn't allow fixed blade carrying unless you can prove you need it for work. The need to open boxes doesn't cut it (yep, pun intended) as a reason.
So, no fiddleback as edc for me, only slip joints.

In general knife carry requires a "reasonable cause", there is no difference in principle between fixed, folders or slipjoints (autos and Balis are illegal for most people). In the city I'll usually carry something that doesn't look scary like a Techno or SAK since it would be easier to convince an officer that it isn't suitable as weapon.
When I'm working in the office or lab I don't really need a fixed blade and it would attract unwanted attention (always somebody who freaks out when seeing a knife). In the lab there are also lots of knives, scalpels, bone saws and secateurs so my personal knife is mostly used for light utility use ;)

Out of the city I can carry whatever I want with no legal issues so then it is Fiddlebacks all the way :D

Will let you know if I'm going to Colorado. Gail (Sal's wife) said she'd give me a tour at a dinner a few years ago

Very cool thread Nathan, it'd be interesting to see some photos of how people actually carry them.

I unfortunately don't have any of the smaller Fiddie's, but EDK is definitely on my wishlist. For now, since I have to dress a minimum of business casual to work, it'd be a bit conspicuous to be wearing a knife and a sheath, and I also hate having anything bulky in my back pockets (used to have some lower back issues). Hence, Spyderco dragonfly and Sage 2 does the job for me as an EDC.
