What's your Everyday Fiddleback?

Haha, yeah, it's a rat race for sure after the game. Typically we just hang out for couple of hours afterwards while the exodus happens as it's more of a gathering of friends and catching up than just going to the game for us. I don't remember anything that looks conspicuously metal detector-like....but doesn't mean they don't have one... thanks for the reply!

I do not go to football games because Beaver Stadium is the third largest city in PA on Saturday. You know the rat race afterwards. I have carried to Bryce Jordon for basketball games and to the new Hockey arena. But they are always folders completely concealed inside the pocket. If you have a small FB that fits in a pocket sheath like VANCE has with his Runt, I would have no problem giving this a try either. I use the same KSF pocket sheath for some BRKs that I carry sometimes. Do they have metal detectors at Beaver Stadium? If not, you should have no problems.

I think I've told this before and it's not related to a College stadium, but here's my story about sporting events, knives and metal detectors.

Last year I took my son to a Colorado Avalanche hockey game (we try to go to a few every year) and they had installed new metal detectors since the last time we had been. I never carried a knife when going into the games as they always patted everyone down looking for weapons. Now you have to empty the pockets, wallet, keys, phone, everything and put it to the side so it can be inspected while going through the detector. I don't even think anything of it, empty my pockets, walk through and hear "Supervisor!". I'm asked to step to the side while security comes over to investigate the "weapon" I was trying to sneak in. Still confused, I asked what they meant. They handed me my keychain with the Leatherman Micra and asked me to open it. I get as far as the scissors and am told "I'm sorry sir, you're not allowed to bring weapons into the arena. We can throw it away for you or you can take it back to your car."

So now I have to remember to take it off my keychain whenever I go to a game.

The menacing weapon in question:

It would not surprise me in the least bit if the college venues don't go to this type of screening. But to my knowledge, they have not done so as of yet at least here. They do not allow bags and backpacks, but they do allow clear plastic bags to carry diapers etc. into the venue.

yeah, I haven't been patted down yet at the PSU football games yet...but I wouldn't be surprised if they start doing it. when I go to phillies games, I get patted down, and if I have a backpack, they'll open all the pockets and check for content. kinda sad that most men (ones who weren't even knife buffs) back in the days carried a pocket knife of some sort, and now something that's as innocuous as a small leatherman is considered a weapon. i see where they're coming from, and i don't have a better solution for it, so not complaining....but just lamenting....

On 9-11-01, I was of the opinion that every passenger on a plane should be armed with a handgun and frangible bullets. That would have stopped all of the nonsense. I would even go so far that if you went through a metal detector, and the thing didn't go off, the TSA should issue temporarily a handgun loaded with frangible bullets. You would have to give it back when you landed at your final destination. In order to get a plane ticket, you would have to show that you are qualified to use a handgun responsibly, or be traveling with someone who is and is willing to blow the terrorist away on your behalf. Sometimes I think that I was born into the wrong century.

All of our LEO members are probably cringing at the thoughts I laid out above, but protecting ones person is a personal responsibility. Personally, I will not live in a state that will not allow me the rights to this responsibility for either myself or my family.

I've been carrying my Runt or 2 Finger Karda everyday. I'll share pics when I return home.

Not everyday, but quite frequently I carry my bushboot in an RLO crossdraw sheath. I am mystified by the burl on this one--it may be among the most beautiful Fiddlebacks I have seen. I think (hope?) that the beauty of the handle is disarming to those who are more alarmist about knives.

In contrast to some of the above comments (not sitting in judgment, just noticing differences), I think of my knives as tools and adornments, much in the same way I might think of my watch. It has a job, but it forms part of the ensemble of how I present myself.

"Weapon" is what I fear others might think of it. Might it save my life in a defensive situation or as a deterrent? Perhaps. It is certainly up to the task, whether or not I am myself. But I know if I ever find myself in that situation, it has already ended badly. And I can't help thinking about how we communicate nonverbally without even realizing it. If I think it is a weapon, something will be communicated, and others are more likely to think in that way too.

Sorry for the rambling; it's been a long day. So now to distract anyone from any toes I might have stepped on (sorry!), here's some pretty pictures.

Would any of you guys with a carver carry it EDC? How much bigger is one compared to other smaller models?

Thanks.

RB,

I would. The only think keeping from doing it so far is lack of a sheath for it. The blade is about the same as a Runt, and the handle is a little longer than a HB or Patch.

Do you have an EDKarda you can set it next to it for comparison?

Unfortunately over the years I've had to let my few EDC size Fiddlebacks go. Thanks to this past Friday's batch I have now corrected my wrongs. The old style 3 finger Karda is an outstanding EDC. I sold a scandi 3 finger version awhile back and have been searching for a convex model ever since. I was able to grab this Friday.

Thanks Thurin,
That helped a lot. The carver was the first model I saw that I liked the most first. I have a bushcraft Karda i tried to edc but its just too long and didn't know what the carver looked like compared to the others. One of these days I hope I'll find one.

One thing to note about the carver, is it has a really long handle in relation to the blade. The handle is as long as a Kephart, Arete, etc, but the blade is the size of a Runt. It's kinda of a niche knife. But if that's what you're looking for, then it's awesome. The concave blade on mine makes it pretty much a "carver" or a utility knife, but I'd like to EDC it a bit and see how it does.

I wish you good fortune in tracking one down.

Hi Redbird
I have been fortunate to find a Carver recently and have used it as an EDC for about a week or so . It's good for small tasks opening box's , cutting bags, opening letters and I've done a few feather sticks which turned out fine. However I would much prefer using my EDC II or my BC Karda as I think you are limited with its blade shape.
I apologize in advance for the crappy mobile phone pics.

Man, looking through everyone's post has given me a Karda-envy. So many variations though....really digging the bushcraft karda - probably not for EDCing during the weekdays due to restrictions at the office, but I think it'd be a great member of a trio for dirt times....picturing a BC Karda, a Woodsman, and a boy's axe....though I typically like one of the knives to have more belly.....oooooh, a Bushcraft Karda with a recluse-like belly....:D (hey, a guy can dream right?) maybe call it bushcraft patch...or something... :P
