What's your favorite .22LR ammo?

Stingers, because of the increased case length, were NOT recommended for some after-market barrels with match chambers. I have Green Mountain barrels on a couple of 10/22's and seem to recall a similar caveat on an older 10/22T.

i plink and shoot targets for fun with friends; no serious match shooting...2 rifles, 1 pistola; only .22 cals.

90% of my .22 cal purchasing (and inventory) is cci minimags...clean, consistent, and dependable; they always cycle without jams in any semi...

the other 10% is a mix of cci velocitor, cci stinger, aguila interceptor and aguila super maximum.

all .22 ammo is dirty...cci is one of the cleanest...federal bulk is maybe the worst, though i hear winchester wildcats and remington thunderbolts could take the filth title...

in general i don't buy "bulk packaged" ammo...but sometimes there are vendors that have cci bulk packaged deals and those i will buy as much as i can...

But there's a special place in my heart for the Aguila loads with the 60gr bullet. It may not be fast, but it kills feral cats, small dogs, varmints, and crows like it was designed to.

yeah, i love that ammo too, when i have a use for it...i use it primarily in a bolt but some semis can cycle it (one of mine can)...aguila SSS is devastating on small varmits...

I have tried them all. I find a higher incidence of misfire with Fed Bulk, but they went bang on a second pull. I would say 2-3 per 550. I have fired everything I could find though, and I can say I don't have a favored round. I tend to stick with CCI Standard Velocity or Fed Target for accuracy with a pistol or rifle, but they all work. I keep Velocitor and Stinger around for emergency varmint hunting, should it come to that - though I suspect that mini-mags or Fed Hi-Vel would work just fine.

I tried about twenty different types of ammo when I bought my 10-22T. Found that CCI standard velocity shot the best for the price. It shot almost as well as a couple of the fancy target ammo I tried, but much more economical. I can get thumbnail size ten shot groups at 50 yds. Plenty good accuracy for me.

My last purchase was Winchester HPs from Walmart. They have a huge cavity and are very explosive on chippys and red squirrels. Normally I go with the federal bulk but Im liking these winnys.

Eley Super Match.

Do these keyhole into the target for you? Most barrels don't have a twist rate to stabilize these long heavy bullets.

remington "golden" bullet bulk packs for me. cheap and reliable and consistent. federal is fine too.

I got the bulk pack of the Remington "Golden" from Wal-Mart and it was dirty and greasy. My hands got covered in greasy metal dust. I found the Federal to be much better.

bummer. i guess ymmv.

i did experience that too. i wouldn't say it was grease necessarily? but that "golden" stuff definitely flakes off in like that yuk powder stuff. it didn't really bug me, but sorry it didn't work for you. better luck next time.

CCI Mini-Mag, not the cheapest, but still pretty cheap, and are almost 100% reliable for m my 10/22.

I use the Federal bulk stuff the most.

Serious target shooters seemed to favor the various Eley stuff when I was working in a gun store.

It's a good idea to try a lot of brands and see what works best in your gun.

I just find the cheapest for plinking, But Mini-Mags are a bulk buy fav and the Ely Match for serious target shooting. I watch Walmart and other box stores for specials to stock up.

Not that I remember, but I usually use a couple of old (60-70 yrs) rifles. They tend to handle slower ammo much better than the newer guns. I have not tried them in my Kimber.

Federal Premium Game-Shok 810's

FEDE810.jpg

40gr, ~1200FPS and super reliable in all of my semi-autos.

Very similar to the CCI Mini-Mag HV's if not the same round.

Federal, in bulk from Walmart, because its the cheapest I can find that is still dependable.... Target or varmit guys may like something more upscale.

my Kimber SVT and Hämmerli 505 like the Federal bulk pack almost as much as Federal Gold Medal or Wolf Match. it's cheaper, easier to find and i can shoot it all day.

the S&W 15-22, Ruger MK2 Slabside gov't. model and Hämmerli 208s all like it too.

works for plinking and ground squirels don't know that they got nailed by the cheap bulk pack when i take the Hämmerli target rifle hunting for varmints.

I would use CCI Stingers for rabbits when I last hunted them in the 80s. The Yellow Jackets have soft noses and would jam occasionally when my ruger 10/22 would get dirty. Yellow jackets would be fine for revolvers.

Whatever's cheapest that hour, that day, at the store! In nearly 70 years of shooting 22s, I've never noticed an appreciable difference when it comes to shooting rabbits, squirrels, quail, wood/sage hens, pheasant, frogs, or whatever at ranges, my goodness, all the way out to 50 feet or so! I don't intertwine target shooting with hunting, two different things entirely. Just about any 22 ammo that goes 'bang!' reliably will do the trick....

Used to be Blazer when I was a kid and they were $.49/box of 50.

Nowadays mostly Federal Champion, other varieties of Federal bulk pack, or CCI if I'm feeling frisky. Still have several bricks of fancier stuff from RFC games when it was only as expensive as the cheap stuff is now. Nowadays I mainly get the CCI because I can't see paying Wolf Match prices for Blazers.

I stay away from Remington gold though...
