What's your favorite bade finish?

I tend to like stonewash best (if done right), as it allows normal wear to blend in nicely.
The only one that bugs me is bead-blasted...it can make a decent stainless steel rust much more easily.

I prefer a hand-rubbed satin finish over a belt-finish that's passed off as "satin"...

Mirror polished is cool too, especially when paired with a hand-rubbed satin finish. For example, a satin blade with mirror polished flats:thumbup: André Thorburn finishes his blades this way.

In general, not fond coated blades but I do like the looks of it on some knives.

I guess a satin or stone washed is my favorite for EDC knives. A blasted finish looks good but stone washed holds up better.

High polish is great if it is done well. I mean really well. If not, I prefer a satin finish.

It all depends upon the knife.

Those blades are beautiful.

Here are some examples of finishes that I like.

Polished satin

Polished stonewash

Two tone satin/stonewash

Cerkote is great for guns, not knives... I don't mind a good dlc coat though from an aesthetics standpoint. And it doesn't affect performance.

Satin finishes are the standard these days and I can dig it, but I too prefer a good mirror polish on a naked blade... Stone wash and bead blasted I'm not fond of however.

I like stonewash and satin finished blades also. I was not fond of the dlc coating on my PM2 so I stripped it and acid washed it then stonewashed and I was alot happier with the result.

I like satin finishes the most. Stone washed is alright. I dislike coated blades but I'm a bit curious about Spyderco's DLC.

Blade finish is inane

Mine are either in the sheath or doing stuff like this.

Who cares what's on the blade

Who cares ? Everyone except you. But if I was going to stab some poor defenseless wood and trash my blade then maybe I wouldn't care either.

Lol. That's not trashing a blade. That's using as it was designed to be used. Lusting for a high shine blade is like going to my tool chest to admire the shiny finish on my wrenches and bits. The only time the tools come out of the chest is to get beat on and dirty. As long as they do the job the appearance is not worried about. Same goes for a blade. I don't know a single person who buys a knife to admire it's finish quality. So it's everyone except those who don't use their knives or certain knives. If you used yours as well, you wouldn't care either. Likewise, if I do get a pretty mirror finished blade, it gets used as designed or "trashed" as you put it. Made me giggle to read your reply.

Hmm. I don't know about him or you or anyone else, but I do use my knives. And when I'm done, I clean them off so the dirt, water, glue, sap, whatever crud doesn't turn them into little piles of rust and gunk. And I like my knives to look the way I like my knives to look while I'm using them. Sue me.

Pretty sure you quoted the wrong guy. I use mine too, and (gasps) I clean them too. So you want me to sue you because I left out the part about cleaning mine? Or do you want me to sue you for another reason?

On customs: Satin finish. I love a good hand rubbed satin finish.

On production pieces I don't really care.

I will never buy a full mirror polished blade. Flats are fine but not all mirror.

I'm not a huge fan of mirror finishes either but it's mainly because I have inexplicably greasy fingers.

I like the two tone finish with stonewashed flats and satin grinds.

I agree, those are very classy.

Mostly, I like satin finishes these days. However, I do find acid washes and blackwashes to be very attractive. If I could find someone to do RamZar's bluewash, I'd be all over that! (that's a hint to you service providers!)

Stonewashed is perfectly acceptable to me. Mirror polish I don't care for. It reminds me of all those incredibly cheap highly polished fixed blades I recall from the 1970s.

The cheaper blade coatings don't do anything for me (are you listening, Benchmade?). However, a well executed DLC coating is, I think, worth the money. I have one Cerakoted blade, but I hear bad things about them peeling, so I don't use it much. :(

Haha a giggle was the desired effect as I was clearly just goofing around. However , I do have a blade finish preference like most other people. I also spit shine everything I buy from Snap On. Which reminds me , I need to wax my new 9/16 deep socket later 😃 And next I plan to get more than just a giggle. I'm aiming for loss of bladder control 😊

On the USA made models, the coating used is really DLC and not ceracote, teflon, or whatever else is being used. I think the other knives are the same (Japan/Taiwan).

You got me good there. So the question is then, if even cheap tools can get that mirror finish, why's it so hard to do on knives? Oh well, I'll just keep using mine.

Good thing I emptied my bladder just before I read that.....
