What's your favorite opening mechanism?

25+ years of muscle memory makes thumb openers my absolute favorite to carry but I actually have wayyyy more flippers in my collection. I’ve also always loved OTF autos and the 80’s action movie lover in me will always have a soft spot in his heart for Balis as well.

Anything but thumbstud. Spydiehole, flipper, D/A OTF, automatic.

My collection reflects that too.

Six spyderco's, one also a flipper
Six flippers, not including the Domino
Three OTF'S
One automatic
Two thumbstud
Two nail nick

I can manage w/other opening methods but my favorites are 1) automatic and 2) flipper and, since I can't legally carry an auto w/a blade >2" long in my state and would NEVER buy such an abomination, my default favorite opener is the flipper.

I'd have to begrudgingly say the Spyderco hole manual opening is my favorite. It just works so consistently well across their various models. I'd rather say thumbstud or even a flipper, but it then it depends on the particular knife. The Spyderco hole just adds a bit of height to the blade that sometimes is a mild annoyance in the pocket for me, but I've had more than a few thumbstud or flipper variations that I just couldn't get used to. Automatic and gravity type openings would be fun but are not even considerations since they are not legal where I live.

Other than the re-sheathing part, a fixed blade is my favorite followed by the others, just about all of the others.
The Spyderco hole does makes things simple, reliable and clutter-free; a properly sized and placed wire tire makes it waveable as well. However, I have and do use all of the others and can live with all of them ... even the Wave. ;)

I like a flipper....But what really matters is how good the action is too open. I have knives with thumb stud that open easier than some flippers.
