Honestly, for a straight SAK, the Spartan model works the best for me. I'd rather have Wegner scissors though. Gotta admit SAKs offer some of the best bang for the buck!

I like my Spartan, a lot, but it does have a corkscrew that I don't use. Maybe I would be better suited for a Tinker?

All the Vic. trekkers have hor. and vert. blade play.
When I bought mine. I've tried all the trekkers in the shop (9) and they
all had an amount of play. I think that if they had not that play, it would
be harder to open theme one handed ( even more harder ).

It's a great knife for the money.

Aha! Thank you for that information. It saves me a trip back to the shop where I got it from. Its one hand opening action is a bit of a struggle anyway. But at that pricepoint I should not complain. I paid 29.95 euro's for it @ Crew adventure store in Rotterdam.

The opening action is not smooth indeed. I use both thumb and index finger to pull the blade out of the handle, than complete the action with my thumb.

I have used the corkscrew on my Spartan once or twice to open wine but the main use for me is that it holds the mini screwdriver which I use quite often on eyeglasses and small electronics screws. You could go with a Tinker but I feel that the can opener tip already has most phillips screws covered.

Spartan is my favorite SAK by the way.

Huntsman light, I love the light with it, i dont mind the extra width but that lil light has been pretty handy along with all the other tools in it.

practise, practise, practise and then you will make it with only the thumb - opening a n d closing !
Hello Stefan,

Thanks for the advice, but a one hand opening knife should open
much more smoother than the trekker does.
Practice will help, but maybe the construction of the knife is not right for a
one hand opener. Maybe that's also the reason they created the play on the blade. I have heard many more complains on the stiff opening action, and that is not a good thing. Strange that the German and the Dutch army issued a knife with that 'shortage' to their troops.
Spite of it all, I like the knife.

I have 2 favorites - Vic Executive that is my EDC with my Spyderco & a Vic Compact that I carry when I need a larger SAK.

Cheers!

My fav SAK changed from OH Trekker to the Pioneer (Alox scales). The alox makes a sturdier knife. In fact it makes the plastic scaled SAK's I have feel a bit flimsy...

I carry my Waiter every day. It only has one layer, so it's so thin, there's no reason not to.

It also provides access to booze when needed. On a campus, this is a frequent need. I also carry a Leatherman Squirt, which makes up for what the Waiter cannot do.
