I don't know about you guys but except for my local area, I have to drive to get to the places I want to be. I've had a little truck with a shell and carpet kit, a 4x4 truck and Lance camper, and now a camping van (on a Ford E-250). I like having the rolling condo while getting there and back. If I can get back to the vehicle, I can survive most anything.

What's your *survival* ride?

CSG,

Going to the woods for me usually means day hikes right now. In the late fall/winter we drive my Jeep Wrangler or My wife's Durango (she used to race rally cars in the desert and won't drive a mini-van). In the summer its my 78 CJ-7 or her 68 CJ-5.

A Ford Ranger right now, but my wife and I are in the midst of shopping for a Jeep Cherokee or Toyotas 4Runner/Land Cruiser. We agreed that we had to have a family rig that went to the woods well.

The only way to go bush! (For me anyway.)

Rebuilt 1978 Jeep Wagoner. I have a pop-up camper on a 3/4 ton Chevy pick-up that works great for the wife and I. Its an old Scamper. We have horses as well.

1975 Ford F250 4x4, 360 V8, with a Gem Top shell. I bought it new in 1975, it only has 94,000 miles on it, and runs like a champ. Gets me in there and out. With the stuff I keep in it, I can stay out a loooonnng time.

My money pit a 1990 wrangler with a chevy 350 and about 8 inches of lift or my daily driver a jeep cherokee until it craps out on me and I have to get something new.

Well , this is sorta the outside view :)

thats going serious bush anyway ...

for going places that we dont expect to find being wet n muddy , we take the bus ... it fits more people and is just comfy to travel in

but if we are going just for a short jaunt thru the bush , we take the car ( note , we allready been over the road we found the warning sign about ... some jokers stoled it from the other end ... )

You guys got me beat. For right now i drive a 1971 VW camper that is colored green and yellow. Been with it everywhere never got me stuck in the desert or the mountains. My other car is a 1981 VW camper. That car been all over too. For shorter trips its my 2005 suzuki SV650. Which is my main ride 95% of the time.
Myal thats a great area you camp at.. I like the bus you got there.

Right now we have a beater Corolla that we are trying to drive into the ground. But my dream bug out vehicle is an old Econoline cargo van converted to 4x4, with all kinds of interesting mods inside.

Because of the massive crime here in BC, you cant leave your vehicle anywhere, even 200 or more KMs from the city, or it will get smashed, vandalized, ripped off or set of fire. Its getting really bad here, so i generally have people drop me off at the trailhead and then they pick me up at a predetermined time. No way am i going to get my truck wrecked.

Before the engine blew, it was my 1995 4Runner with 33's, body armor, lights and all that fun stuff. Perfect camping rig. With the tires, narrower body, and 4 wheel drive, it could pretty much go anywhere short of rock crawling, and when the rear seats are folded down, the rear cargo area is about 6 feet long. Load up the roof rack with all your gear and it's the most accessible motorized camper! Once I get the new engine in there (from a 1999 Tacoma), it should get more power, better economy, and more appreciation from me!

God, I realize exactly how much I miss that thing now...

VW campers are pretty good , I do not laugh at them , they go places where I really never expected anything 2 wheel drive to turn up at .
Raindog
I have a corona , but used to have a corolla , they are seriously hard to kill , but with a set of grippy tyres , they go most places you need them to .

A bit of thinking instead of just driving , and most tracks become navigable in my experience ... I do carry a shovel and fill in some of the nastier gullies to get thru tho at times .. and a tarp for covering the front when we play submarines at the river crossings , but its all good fun .
