What's your going-to-the-woods ride?

MY '06 Toyota Tacoma access cab 4X4 4.0 V6. Love this truck ! It has awsome power & is very offroad capable, I have a set of MAXXIS BuckShot Mudders in stock size . My other 4X4 is my '05 Yamaha BigBear 400 atv.
I can go anywhere with these 2 4x4's ;)

I go most places with (stop laughing) a 2001 Buick LeSabre known as the Silver Bullet. You'd be surprised the places it can go. It also gets good fuel mileage and can haul a surprising amount of stuff. If the need arises, I take my parents' 89 Ford F250 "beater."

Aside from my MTB it used to be this '75 Land Rover Series III:

Currently it's an '06 Subaru Forester XSL:

The Forester is far more comfortable, get's there much quicker and is surprisingly capable but is let down by the approach and departure angles and the low range not being low enough. Lease is up end of Sep and will probably go back to a SWB 4WD. Probably either a Jeep Wrangler or Mitsubishi Pajero. Maybe a Land Rover Defender 90 if I don't go with another lease.

Its funny how far a 2WD can go if driven properly. I find that what realy limits me is ground clearince. My VW camper has about an extra 1.5in lift in the back and that gets me places in the desert that mostly are for Jeeps. Most important dont go too fast and never stop. VW van loaded with fire wood and camping gear for 4 people for one week time with less then 80hp LOL.. Im going to see if i can post any pics of the old one out in the desert and some of my newer van 1981 with 100hp and 30% heavier...
Rocket i had a customer that had his 1987 buick stolen. They found the car so far out that they had to get a 4WD tow truck to get it.

...My VW camper...

You guys talking about VW Campers and didn't let me know? You are being mean to me! ;) ;)
Check this out:

My gf and me trying out the Grabbers. I got 2.5cm of ground clearance out of these ones.

We gave some dunes a try but this van is waaaaaaay too heavy and the sand was too soft. I didn't make it for just 2m. I guess next time I will go a little faster :D

I took just a minute to get it out.

2001 VW T4 California Syncro 2.5TDI 102hp rear diff lock 215/75 15 Grabber AT2 and about to get Seikel lift kit and underride protection (reverse engineering from Seikel originals).

Sad but true right now is waiting for a new gear box (I bought it second hand but it is still on warranty so I won't pay a penny to get it fixed).

It is my one and only vehicle...

For me most of the time it is a Honda 4 Wheeler, I throw my junk on it from the Casa, and head into the mountains - God's blessed me to be right on the doorstep of some nice woods.

Nice rides, everyone. I hope to pick up an old beater tacoma as a first rig this summer, Toyotas will run forever.
A nice Yamaha bike on the back would be nice as well.

My old "Cascade Mountain Beater" 88 Ranger... Ugly as sin, but mechanically sound with a new engine, etc...

Oh, and I really HATE being stuck

Vary your sources, practice your methods.

Rocket i had a customer that had his 1987 buick stolen. They found the car so far out that they had to get a 4WD tow truck to get it.

I used to drive around a '94 Park Avenue with the supercharged engine. That thing was a complete tank. I remember misjudging the depth of some snow on the way home from school one day. Made it about 50 yards through 2-foot drifted snow on the road before she stopped. Made it halfway back out, but by that time it had dug down enough that it got high-centered on its own tracks. I frequently checked cows in the pastures with that car.

With this in tow:
1987 Grumman Sportboat w/2002 5HP Merc 2 stroke.

Hiding behind the boat are three of the bikes. 2 Treks (820 and a 3900) and a Mongoose that belongs to my daughter. Bikes not shown are a 24" single speed BMX Diamondback Reactor, a Classic Takara (early 80's 10 speed road bike for that old school ride when the urge strikes) and several BMX Freestyle bikes that belong to my son.

The van is RWD but has got me plenty deep into the woods. The battle scars on the drivers side can attest to the abuse this van has taken. Got a little tight in the trees :p .

Oh.... I was about to ask you if that van was a 4WD... but I just read this. Do you have just the seats or some camper equipment inside (freezer, stove, etc)?

As of today, it is a 1997 Chevy Tahoe. I can finally take the whole family in one vehicle.

Here is my newly acquired ride, a 2003 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. I am probably going to pick up a 1990 Chevy 1500 4x4 in a week or so that I am buying to help out a friend. That will become the hunting and beating rig, but this one will get me where I need to go in style.

My first car that I actually had any input on was a 1988 Jeep hardtop. That was my first introduction to 4 wheel drive. I haven't gone back since. A lot of guys at work scuff at me, but I rationalize that even though I hardly use 4 wheel drive, if I only need it once per year, it justifies the cost to me. After the jeep, I bought a Explorer, a Blazer, a Sierra pickup and now I have a 2008 Silverado crewcab. My parents bought my Sierra off me and now feel the same way about 4 wheel drive and their in their 70's!

Growing up in the 70's, as a family we used to go to the Upper Pennisula here in Michigan to go camping. We had the traditional stationwagon that would get stuck anywhere we went. Where we went camping, we were 40-50 miles from any city and so you couldn't afford to get stuck. I remember my dad being so anal about where we'd park to car. We'd all complain, but my dad knew what he was doing with what he had. We really had to pay attention around Lake Superior because of all the sand. I do remember getting stuck a few times and the work to get a stationwagon un-stuck!

I have since gone back to where we'd camp with my 4x4's and its simply amazing!
I mean, we go to places and park where we'd NEVER try before!
I am a die hard 4x4 fan and will NEVER go back!

My intro into 4x4 was when I was a kid and Dad bought an exmilitary Dodge M37 , it was a serious ute .
But it spoiled us too , we just took it forgranted that all 4x4s had that amount of low down grunt , and could naturally go where it could go .
in later years , I found that its just not so , DOdge did some things seriously right with that old truck :) , Nissan and Toyota tried hard , but their off the shelf units just couldnt compete at all .

Nowdays , Im driving a old nissan , old because its easy for me to fix on the road , and I dont mind stuffing the resale value by denting or scratching it either ..

I laugh at the yuppies who go bush in their new 4x4s but have to be so careful not to make it dirty , incase they spoil the leather interior or something ...

I took the carpet out of my car to make it easier to hose the mud out when we go play in it :)

Id LOVE to see anyone try that with a new vehicle and not stuff their ECU or other electronics .

I also drive old because its cheap , and disposable if needs be ... spares are plentiful and cheap , and all within my budget :)

I spent $600 buying my 4x4 ... I seen knives sell for more than that .

This is the vehicle we use to cruise the trails of the Sierra and N. Ca. Once the wife gets a new car, I've got plans for this thing.

Dude why is your wife's face so white ?:D

Hey just joking with ya, I understand, she must be on America's most wanted list or something eh !!!!
