I haven’t been as active lately as I’d like to be, and it has been a while since I hosted a GAW. My apologies but between work, family and school it has been really hard to keep up with everything (especially the Guardian’s thread!). Any spare time these days I try to spend in the shop learning how to make knives.

I’ve been trying to think of which knife I am going to offer up…something fancy? …a user? Who is even going to enter?

Here’s the thing…my first few GAWs were a lot of fun and it was a great opportunity to get to know everyone. There were a lot of other GAWs happening too and it was infectious. I realized, over time, that a lot of folks, including me, just don’t enter the GAWs. Most of the time, it is a matter of our current collections and how most of us don’t really need ANOTHER knife. At a minimum, we are too humble to enter because we are blessed already and truly want someone else to have the opportunity.

So, what I am offering is not a knife…but a 2-year subscription to Knife Magazine. I’ve seen someone else offer a subscription before and I really liked that idea. I get so excited when I see that big ol’ magazine show up in the mailbox! I thought maybe someone out there might appreciate it as much as I do.

No need to be humble. Unless you already have a subscription, there is no excuse to decline entry :) My treat to you.

The Rules:
• This GAW is open to all active participants in the Traditional Sub-Forum a.k.a. The Porch.
• To enter, all you need to do is reply with a description (and photo if possible) of a current grail knife.
• The knife doesn’t have to exist or be in your possession, but it does have to be traditional.
• Feel free to comment or reply to other posts.
• When the time comes, I will draw a random number to correspond with everyone’s post number. If needed, I’ll repeat until there is a winner.

Tastes changes over time and it is fun to periodically revisit what a grail means to each of us. It is almost as fun as periodically going over in our heads how we would spend all that money if we finally hit the lottery

For me, my true grail hasn’t been made yet. I know what it looks like, I’ve thought about it often and in great detail, and I am working towards it, but I just don’t have the skills to make it on my own yet. I can’t wait to share it with everyone when that time comes

For the purpose of this GAW, let's define "grail" as a knife that you really, really love (in-possession) or want (not in-possession)

To kick things off for now though, I think this Lloyd checks most of the boxes for what an aesthetically pleasing traditional knife looks like to me. It is grail-worthy and, lucky for me, it is part of my own collection.

Good luck everyone and thanks for being a part of this special place we call The Porch

Well since I have come to knowing about GEC knives I have been really wanting a Whaller I just find it quite unique. Altho I would really love to see a Muskrat with snakewood or Abalone. Pardon my spelling.

I'd like to enter for my friend mitch4ging mitch4ging Dennis.
He's been a little under the weather so-to-speak and I think this would pick up his spirits.

My grail knife is near-impossible to get, as a grail should be. I came (sorta) close to it once but the seller backed out. It's my favorite GEC pattern (#76 Jack) and the shield and jigging just do it for me. Maybe I'll luck into one some day and maybe it will just remain something to eternally search for. I'm being patient and vigilant. ;)

Had to Google an image, I think it belongs or belonged to a member here.

Great GAW, Darren. Not entering for myself (I have a subscription--the best knife magazine out there), but on behalf of mitch4ging mitch4ging .

My "grail":

Elephant ivory Bowie knife. The one pictured is a Randall knife. Not practical to EDC, but what a knife! (My main EDC is a 12cm Laguiole. Fits in the pocket, perfect size for the hand, very practical and beautiful.)

Good luck to all!

Now that is nice! I love the shield!!

My grail has and always will be one of Mr Halfrich's folders, had this one in several years ago and just love the blade shape and handle contours, blade was ground nice and thin to really cut well, but out of my reach.

The blade's edge starts fairly close to the bolster and there isn't any sharpening choil on this so it wouldn't get hung up on material when you are cutting with it, plus the tip is lower which I do prefer a great deal.

and thanks, I am certainly in on this, it has been probably decades since I had any knife magazines, that would be cool to get once again,

Wow. That's awesome.

Great GAW! Thank you for the opportunity!
I hope to stumble across T.A. Davison #1703 some day.

I hesitated a bit too long when I saw it pop up; was disappointed when Todd said it had sold; have been disappointed ever since.

I don't usually admire Davison knives (don't hate me), but this one is really smooth.

John, Vince,
Thank you gentlemen very much for the nominations, I am flattered and grateful! You guys and Darren are what makes this place so special!

Great giveaway Darren! My current “grail” would be an Enrique Pena knife. I keep looking around and would be thrilled with a micarta swayback for example....but if we’re talking I just won the lottery, than I would have to up my grail to one of his stockmans.

Great idea for a giveaway, and very generous of you....

I have quite a few knives that I really like, that are also really useful. I suppose at this time in my life, my only "grail" type knife would be one of Jerome Latreille's laguiole knives.
something similar to this.... in my mind, what he does is pure artistry in steel.
