What's your grail knife?

I was 13 in 1991 and flipping through a smokey mountain knife works catalog. In the top right corner on the Gerber page was the LMF and BMF amongst the gators... this was a time in my life when I watched Commando and Harley Davidson and Marlboro Man hundreds of times lol...

I fell in love with the BMF immediately... but holy ****, for me, $189 back then was like $100K now... anyhow I always loved that knife...

Well, I picked up a 9/10 example for a really good price and it came today! I gotta say, it was SO worth the wait! I love it. Such a perfect, timeless design! Just got to get the edge touched up, and it'll be aces! Oh well, at least it'll be harder to cut myself while I play with it for hours this weekend! :p

Anyways, what's your grail, and why?

Right now? Waiting on a Phillip Patton 7" bowie in O1/L6 twist damascus. I think I'll be able to take a break after that.

No such thing for me. Different knives for different things and as long as technology marches forward there will always be an improvement in the wings. Nothing wrong with grails and chasing them, but it's not my thing.

The Marbles ideal, a buck 119 with a factory left handed leather sheath ( if they make one ), and the western w36-8 are my grail knives.

BTW Harley Davidson and the Marlboro man is an awesome movie 👍

Whatever I bought last. It keeps changing:o. Currently waiting on a Buck Ranger in S30V, oak handles, rivets from the Custom Shop.

^This. I tend to just look around and if I see something that I like and I'm willing to pay the money... I'm kind of glad to not be chasing anything in particular.

I sold it years ago and how I wish I had it back. It was a beautiful engraved folder by Harvey McBurnette. You live, you learn.

A few knives I couldn't have when younger. One I had but not the nice wood handled example; I do have now. Thankfully, I only bough what I used. Thankfully because many that I lusted after were either not as good as the hype or are well and truly bettered by superior modern materials.
The LMF and BMF were top knives of their day, though on the big over built side. I've handled a few and happy I never did pulled the trigger on one at the time. At the time there wasn't the choice we have now, and they were certainly pretty good. (Always wondered if the grappling hooks would actually be useful, or was that just the Bushmaster??).
However, there are plenty of things that I have bought just to see what all the fuss was when I used to lust but couldn't have. Air Rifles I did the whole hog and bought many. Sadly, most were very disappointing. If you have the itch then scratch it. Nostalgia is fun, so go for it.

The Blackjack Folding Mamba, now have two, one for my son. Classic good knife, he loves his. (We both have others, but these are special to us).

Watched Vince Evans deliver his Basket Hilts at the Blade Show starting in the early 2000's. Just incredible work. Finally about a decade later I had saved enough to order one from him. Then in a few years my grail arrived. So much work goes into these. Vince does the forging, inlays and engraving and his wife Grace carved the handle.
Some wip photos follow up the finished shots.

The next grail for me would be something like one of these by C. Gray Taylor. (Got lots of saving to do though.) :D

I own them both.

At some point the word "grail" started to define the knives I enjoy using the most.

If I had a grand to blow on a knife, I wouldn't spend it. There is nothing...AT THE MOMENT...that I care about.

I've been carrying my Grail now for 2 yrs...a Brad Southard AVO re-ground and customized by REK...
It will do...

Oh thas easy. I can't have it though. THAT SUCKS !

But I'll play anyway :

This basic knife shape / handle portions / blade shape

With the Cold Steel KrayEx handle (shown) cut down to those proportions (which I am going to make happen soon). No . . . really. I'm serious. Stop laughing . . . OK I see the humor in it too but . . .

and just when you thought that was the hard part . . .

I want the steel and thinness behind the edge of the Doug Ritter Griptillian that has M390 steel. The top knife below.
That'll take some doing . . .

Why ? What do you mean why ? :) :) :) :)
Because it cuts stuff (would cut stuff like nobody's business) and it fits my hand / uses.

well you asked.

Alternatively this knife with the same KreyEx handle scale material and M390 blade steel and this blade shape and handle shape. I ground the blade down to 2 mm thickness. SERIOUS cutter . . . now.

Why ?
I thought we went through that.
Well because the blade is longer and the handle is more robust and still is the basic shape I like. I could use just that knife for the rest of my days and be happy.

No grail for me per se, just my next amusement which, right now, is a Winkler belt knife with the "tribal maple" handle 80CrV2. That'll keep me content for a week or two, then on to the next one.
