What's your grail knife?

or . . .

Sonnydaze's Brad Southard AVO re-ground and customized by REK...
It will do...

HECK YAH ! ! ! !

That could work for me ! ! !

If I had a grand to blow on a knife, I wouldn't spend it. There is nothing...AT THE MOMENT...that I care about.

I've been carrying my Grail now for 2 yrs...a Brad Southard AVO re-ground and customized by REK...
It will do...

Wow, that looks great.

Production?
I guess it's a discontinued Bagwell Bowie by Ontario

Custom?
Most likely one of the blades from Makandr here at BF, they are all awesome (special mention the giant americanized Tanto from some time ago on the "The Gallery" subforum)

My grail would be a deadlock OTF by grant and gavin hawk. My grail production knife hasn't been made yet.

Grail and production do not belong in the same sentence.

Then why did you just put them there? :p

More seriously, I disagree strongly. A grail is exceptionally personal and trying to tell someone else what theirs should or shouldn't be seems like an exercise in futility.

It is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

Grail: something that you want very much but that is very hard to get or achieve.
I think a lot of us get the word Grail confused. Yes a Grail can be a production or custom but if I can go out and buy a CRK (as an example) anytime (love the knife) I would not consider it my Grail. But if I didn't have the funds saved and it took me a long time to get that CRK then it could be considered a Grail.
My grail is a R.J. Martin Q36 in a certain style and a full custom Shirogorov. I have not been able to get either one but the quest continues

Right now just the Shivworks clinch pick. The f'er won't ship to canada the only place that I can find that sells it that is. Stupid giant river store wont ship me my clinch pick!!! Rargh!!!

For a number of years, it was a REKAT Pocket Hobbit. I might still pull the trigger if one crossed my path.
Stag handled Carbon 5 Trailmaster would be cool, but I have a kraton handled one actually gets used from time to time. I should have it re handled with stacked leather.

We all have our pet peeves.

There are "production" knives that are just as difficult to come by as any "custom." The two knives I had the hardest time acquiring were both made on a production line.

With that said, I can understand being a bit disgruntled by those who refer to a readily-available, in-production knife as a "grail."

And given that extended and difficult are both entirely subjective, I repeat, trying to tell someone what their grail should/shouldn't be is just foolhardy.

Well, I can only speak for me, but my "production" (mid-tech) AVO by Brad Southard is and was a fine knife all by itself. And yes, you can buy these thiings. But, it was only AFTER I got it back from REK that it became my GRAIL, and still is.

Or even better a real nihonto. Made by real Japanese artisan that comes with that sword paper.

There are too many great knives and makers out there for me to focus on only one knife. If anything, I have a grail budget that I yearn for, where I can pay my bills and buy an unlimited amount of knives simultaneously.

However, I can happily say that I own most of the knives that I have longed for. A Diskin Fire probably took me the longest to find, and I payed way more than what they sold for new. Oddly, I don't carry it often.

I have traded away full customs from Michael Burch and Brad Southard SEVERAL years in the past. My grail knives are still folders, full customs, from both those fantastic people and knife makers.

The problem has arose for me where once a grail is finally obtained, my tastes have changed so dramatically that the knife has lost grail status once in hand.
