For years my INFI grail had been a big chopper with reach.
In a thread awhile back I advocated for a thinner, longer machete style in INFI, and I’m still interested, but one of the issues was whether to build a knife out of INFI that would be so thin (as in standard machete thickness) that it couldn’t be expected to stand up to lateral pressure without snapping, thereby failing the Busse warranty. After mulling that over for a few months, I have come to the following question:
If know in advance that I can’t expect a knife to survive what I plan to do with it, and I’m going to do it anyway, why would I want to spend more than a few dollars on it?
I’m not sure I can answer that in a way that would be consistent with spending INFI prices on a machete. Sure, it would be nice to have an edge that would stand up better than 1055/1095 @ 50 HRC, but how important is that on a “disposable” machete, really? After all, you can certainly hone a standard machete to a razor edge, and I’ve pounded plenty of them lengthwise through deer skulls with no ill affects on the blade other than a peened spine, even using a hammer:
Bottom line, I really think the NMFBM has filled the bill for me. The LE version was a tad heavy for my personal taste at .27”, and the CG at .25” was not quite at the limit of what I thought was optimal, but Knife Hunter took pity and sold me a couple in black paper/satin that are right at .26”. I didn’t expect to like the machined mags on this model as well as the hand-smoothed, but with gloves, the added texture makes for a very solid grip. In short, my bell has been rung! This may be “it” for me:
On a side note, my very first Busse was a Basic 5 ordered direct from the factory in the 1990’s, and a couple of reground versions from the shop have served as my most useful of all knives. If I hadn’t discovered that knife and its siblings, the concept would no doubt have been my grail:
The SY S5LE took the B5 concept to another level with INFI and mudder-textured Res-C. Add in some fine tweaking by Ban, and this is now my go-to hunter/camper/utility user. If I didn’t own it already, this would definitely be my grail:
I count myself undeservedly lucky to own these fine knives, and when the devil finally comes to collect his due, these are the ones I’ll try my damnedest to hide.
