I love to EDC saks, but mosly the relatif slim&light ones...

so what SAKs in your collections see less pocket times?

mine are:
- Centurion (to large unless i got the chance to go outdoors - hardly any chance)

- swisschamp (i'll bring it if i go out of town or traveling)

- Farmers (i surely love how solidly its build but havent got any need for the saw so the soldier got carried more)

- Explorer (great SAK, but a bit bulky for everyday, still love it though... wish the yeoman is still in production...)

- secretary (nice, slim and light, but i'm doomed if i got any screws to fix or bottles to open)

so whats your personal experience guys?

I made a progression over the course of several years, toward lighter more simple sak's. I once had an old huntsman, and I noticed that after the newness wore off, it got carried less and less as I went back to my old Wenger SI, or tinker.

The huntsman got sold off.

Then I noticed that I had graduated to the alox sak's almost exlusivly. The Wenger SI, pioneer, cadet, cadet 2, solo, secretary, alox bantam.

The tinker and cellidor bantam got sold/given away.

Now I don't have any sak that does not get carried, but I have a very small working accumulation of alox sak's, and the old standby classic that get used all the time. If I'm not going to use it on a very regular basis, it goes. Now all my sak's are two layer or less alox.

Exept for my beloved classic.

That's an easy one,My Swisschamp. It's a great knife, but it's way to big for my taste, even in its leather sheath. If I carry a big SAK(no pun intended:D),I opt for my Huntsman or Climber.I have a little leather sheath that fits both.

Oh yeah,I never leave home without the Classic on my keychain. It will always be there!

Rule of thumb - the bigger and wider and heavier= the less it gets carried and used. I do have some pouches that I've made and tooled over the years for super tinkers and farmers and bigger - but generaly a Classic on the keys and an Alox Cadet in the pocket!
Peace

Seems to be a trend here. :)

Despite it having been my sole EDC for many years , these days almost the only time I carry my Swisschamp anymore is when traveling. Also, my Tinker sees very little pocket time. The only reason I have it at all is back when I was looking to replace a worn out Swisschamp pouch, I found one packaged with a Tinker for a total price slightly more than the pouch alone. For some reason, I have kept it for "just in case." It's really a great knife, at one time would have been a favorite, but now is used only occasionally when I'm going "minimalist," which is seldom. OTOH, my Rambler gets a lot of use as an auxiliary to my Leathermen because of its nail file, toothpick, tweezers and magnetized small ph screwdriver.

anything more than 3-layers probably won't go unnoticed in the pockets.
could say that the fat ones makes for a pretty sloppy carry anyways.
come to think of it, vicky's swisschamp and wenger's tool chest do make the perfect bedfellows.
they're probably the most restful saks in my possession.
but they do get the most attention from folks who get to meet my humble sak collection.

I have to wonder, how many people really carry the big boys?

Being a knife knut in general, and a pocket knife knut in particular, and a sak carrier in very particular, I notice knives in public. Espcially the red handle ones with the silver cross on it.

I see tons of classics on keychains all over. The 30 something young yuppyish looking lady in the store, the 20 something guy in the REI outlet, the 40 something zoo keeper at the Washington D.C. zoo, camping areas, and shooting ranges. I see tinkers, some spartans, some alox here and there like soldiers and farmers. Every guide on the rain forest trip my better half and I had in Costa Rica had a tinker in a nylon belt pouch along with with a Bic lighter. But very very rarely do I see one of the bigger sak's actually being used in public.

I wonder how many of the champs and the like are sold for the "gee whiz"factor, then quietly retired to a sock drawer and replaced for edc with a tinker or soldier, or two layer sak?

I see even non knife people with classics on their keyrings, a lot of times with some advertising logo on it, indicating a give away. I wonder if the classic is not the most carried pocket knife in the world?

I think it's due to availability of Classics and Tinkers/Spartans. All the big box stores are almost guaranteed to carry them, while the more advanced models are only available from a few specialized stores, or online. I doubt the average person on the street knows there are many models of Victorinox knives beyond Classic, Spartan, Tinker, and the big Champ.

Super Tinker, Huntsman, Swisschamp, Trailmaster. I rarely pocket carry the regular Tinker anymore either, since the Soldier has the important tools on it, and I prefer the awl, which I use a lot for scraping, opening normally, not halfway out of the back.

I've gotten more and more into pocket comfort and whether or not I actually use every tool on it or not. That means my Soldier (which I carry if I don't carry my Spirit S) and my Executive, which is always with me. I carried a Classic for years, but find I prefer the Executive over that. I'd like a Farmer; even if I don't often use the saw, it's good to have it there. I don't think I'd go any thicker than a Farmer, though. I think even with the saw on it, the Farmer would still be thinner and probably lighter than my Tinker.

For close to ten years, a Swisschamp was my only pocket knife, and at one time or another I used every blade and implement except for the small screwdriver on the back spring. I carried it in a Vic belt pouch with no problem, hardly knew it was there until needed. Neighborhood kids used to call me "Knifeguy." At the time I considered the "big boy" indispensable, but things change. Leatherman suits my lifestyle these days, but the Champ still gets some belt time when I travel. Can't beat the versatility, and it's legal to carry almost everywhere.

I would say my Pioneer Apprentice. I never actually carry it, it stays on my workbench. 2nd would be my +B Bushcrafter, I only carry it when I go hiking. My regular edc is a Soldier (i have a couple backups that don't get carried but I'm not counting those) and I find it has all the thing that I need most.

I was given a couple of junky Chinese clones.

Most of the tools either non functional or just barely functional.

It's kind of sad, really.

I've got over a hundred SAK's and I don't think any of them are over 4 layers thick.

My first SAK was a Huntsman and I had that for 30 years before going mad and buying all the rest, yet I hardly ever carry a Huntsman now, it's now usually an alox Soldier or alox Cadet or alox Solo (but 90% of the time the Soldier) with the odd Spartan/Tinker/Climber thrown in now and again.

Jackknife... Whats the color of your classic cellidor? Just curious.. I honestly doing just fine with waiter, manager, ambassador or my trusty sportsman.. But those big boy SAKs looks impressive for non knife people.. And they give me some peace of mind that it might be usefull when i go traveling.. It would be dissapointing when i want to use some tools that i know that i have but i didnt carry it.

I carry the old standard red.

I was at a gun show and a lady had boxes of TSA confiscated knives, and a big box of them were sak's. She had the small 58mm's priced at 3 dollars each, or 2.50 for three, or 2 dollars for 5 or more. Most were in very good shape, needing only a cleaning with dish soap and warm water, so I bought a whole bunch as give aways, all red. I figure there's so many red ones around, I may as well stick with it. The better half carries a purple one, sister in law a blue translucent, and the rest of the family has all the colors of the rainbow. Every member of the family has a classic on the keyring.

I don't think I've ever carried my Swisschamp on my person (although I have thrown it in a bag/backpack a number of times whilst traveling).
