What's your perfect size knife ?

I am finding that I really like the RC -4 for most tasks. Of course, I always forget my flippin camera, so no pics yet.

The RC4 is a good knife but with a handle maybe 1/2"-1" longer and a little fatter it could be a great knife !!!!

The ideal size for me depends on the circumstance. Are you strictly talking about in the field? I assume you are because of the way you wrote the question.
Lets face it, I am a Dozier guy, Pit, you know that, so of course I am going to choose a Dozier. I would have to say the KS-3. To me, this is one of the most versatile knives and sizes that I own. This knife packs a 4 3/4 blade with the overall length of 9 3/16.
Though it has a little longer blade than I would typically go for, it is still small enough to use for small tasks. I commonly use this knife for camp chores: splitting/ gathering kindling, building a shelter, food prep, cutting myself by accident! and all the fun things we do in camp. This knife also excels in the field with game. I have used this knife on many deer and elk, fish aplenty and a few other critters.
This would be my go to knife in a survival situation, my "do it all" knife.
Don't get me wrong, I like big knives too, I just personally don't have as much of a use for them as I do a knife of this size. I think the largest knife I would ever need is the KS-7 which I have on the way in August. That knife will be my primary camp knife, though I wont be using it on any game for the most part.

Another vote for the pro guide. I still reach for it over my custom 4in. dozier wilderness.

Hi all,
Southern Cross and Rock 6, I think you two are right on with what said.
Southern Cross what you said was pretty much right on a 4" knife will do plenty if not all that you need a knife to do camp and kitchen. But if you were like in Rock 6 postion( Military man) a d 6" knife sure looks better on the battle field when your weapon jams and out come your knife to take of business if need be.
Before I started making knives I carried the 4" Chris Reeves shadow III or the 5" mountainer. and did that for years. Those blade lengths are just fine. And other than needing a bigger knife in the Kithchen like Southern Cross said. When I started making knives I got to really check out different blade lengths and have found that the 5.5" to 6" is really to my liking a lot more than the 4" to 5" blade lengths. so that is what I carry now as my EDC. getting into a car or truck or tractor ( I live on a farm) that 6" blade length with the sheath is just fine. Earlyer in this thread I posted a pic of the 2 Recon knives that I made up one with the 6" blade and one with the 7" blade. Well one day I decided to wear that 7" as my day carry blade, I helping a neighbor cut some trees and he has a tree shearing machine well when I was cutting trees with my chain saw and brush cutter that was fine to carry a 7" knife, but when I got in the tree shearing machine and sat down to run it WOW could I tell that was not the greatest time to be carrying a 7" knife with sheath talk about a jab in the ribs LOL But I can hop in and out with the 6" blade and never know it is there ( no rib jabbing LOL) .
When I took that new 10" blade blank that I am going to be makeing some
10"to 14" blades with . When I walked into my Moms house and showed it to her 10" blade blank, She did not even say hi she said I want one jus tlike that but it has to be thin. I showed her the thickness and said I will make her one with a either 3/32" or even 1/16" thickness for the kitchen, cutting cabbage heads and lettuce, and water melon and big squash a bigger longer knife really shines in the kitchen. I will tell ya to that there are times in camp to where a big knife knife shines and that is when you are butchering game that has good thick layer of blubber between the skin and the meat.
My Granddad would tell me that from time to time.
My Granddad Don Breeden and used to hunt all over the world with Fred Bear of the Bear Bows and archery. They carried both small and large blades
grand dad told me.

Any ways pit good thread again and it really is neat to see and read what others carry and use on a daily basis.

Rock and James,

Thanks guys! Of course it's going to be a bit hard to get out of the shop until the swelling in my head goes down ;)

Rock, I'll get you squared away ASAP if you can get the little guy up here!

Well, for ONE knife, a 6-8 inch blade is preferred. It's the best do-all size range, IMO.

For multiple blades, the blade besides my big chopper will be in the 3-4.5" range -- basically either a Busse BAD or Bark River Aurora.

Not sure if we are talking one knife situation here, but for my needs I would say something larger than 3 and less than 4.5 inches.

However, what I realize.. is that what matters more than blade length most times is handle shape. Ive more often been made aware that a knife doesnt suit me because of its handle rather than its blade length. (Now blade geometry is another issue).

My favorite length is "one of everything!" :D If I could only have one then it'd probably be 6-10", but in the 10" range would have to be designed so I could grip the spine near the tip for precision work.

My thoughts exactly every time I consider a knife I am buying. The Rat Cutlery knives are nicely made, but the handles are to short for me and the scales too thin. Sometimes an otherwise great knife design fails for me in that the handle just does not sit well in hand. That's always a deal breaker for me on a knife. If the handle is'nt comfortable it's not going to be used, then why own it.

THAT! Is a nice looking knife.

Infi-del, check out the NWA sub in the Makers section  Nick does some great work! This is my first from him, but I have a feeling it won't be my last. TKnife, TexasTony, Snow, Savageiceslayer and others have actually USED their Scouts for a while, and I've heard nothing but good  As we're talking about handles, Nick's handle and the Bravo-1 are by far the best handles I've ever used. I agree, it is more important to me than the blade itself.

Gravey dan, tracker and rksoon yes you are right about the handles if they do not fit your hand good than yuck LOL.
