What's your perfect size knife ?

Over the past few months I had two nice knives made in the 4"-4.25" range, a Laconico and a JK. Add to it my Koster Bushcrafter and Moras and you could guess that this size is the one for me.

I'm patiently waiting for a 5" blade Koster BushMaster and am looking forward to using it for some fun in the woods, but I doubt I'd need the extra size. Who wouldn't want an extra inch though;)

I'd love to have a smaller fixed-blade knife in the 3" blade length someday too.

Choppers, you can have them. I like playing around with them, but I feel a bit self-conscious with something Rambo-esque on my hip. That's just me. Your mileage may vary.

"Perfect size"... Ha! :D This debate will rage or at least smolder as long as there are folks who like and use knives. A chef will naturally have a different answer than a grunt, and a fisherman will have a different answer than a survivalist.

I love/hate these threads; love 'em because they're fun, hate 'em because I'm a two-knife kinda guy. (or small knife + hawk/hatchet/saw/machete). It's my humble opinion that there isn't any perfect knife for all uses.

There's definitely a place for <4" blades; my Becker Necker is one of my faves largely because it's light and rests real comfy in my pocket. But the handle is too short to use very long on jobs like carving tent stakes; it makes my palm/fingers sore after a while. To be honest, if it was the only knife I had in a survival situation or camping trip, I'd be darn glad I had it but would plan to bring something just a little bigger and with a "real" handle next time.

I've found that a 4" - 4 1/2" blade with a 4 1/2" - 5" handle is what I'm most comfortable with for most general tasks. I don't think it's a coincidence that literally thousands of excellent knives in this range have been bought and well-used. Camp chores, whittling, food prep, and so on.

I'm not a big hunter, but of all the small/medium game hunters I've asked, NONE of them wanted a blade much longer than 4". Sacrilege alert... MANY of the good ol' boys I know who hunt regularly, use locking folders with blades in the 3 1/2" range. I'm just saying. The folks who go after big walleyes obviously want a longer, narrower, thinner, more flexible blade; but they usually don't make fuzz sticks or build shelters with their filet knives. ;)

I like a knife that lets me lay my index finger along the spine and guide it well. Any longer, and I'm sort of wasting steel; an extra inch or two doesn't seem to help me much, and sometimes gets in the way.

Now if we're talking about a knife that must also chop and slash, I'm going for 8" blade length minimum. Again, I'm not a one-blade kinda guy.

Thanks for letting me rant on one of my favorite subjects. :)

could it be the TAK1 ???:D
buzz

Yeah I definitely like the TAK 1 more than the RC4 !

If I had to pick only one size for many use's it would be in the 4.75/5.00" range.
One of my Busse ABA's, or the Dozier KS-3 I just got at Blade would be my choice for only one.

Most of my EDC's users are in the 3" to 4" though. I have alot of larger Busse's that doesn't get much use at all.

Thank goodness we don't have to only have that one knife senerio... I usually have a couple diff sized knives on me.

How about some more images, every thread could use a few more knife pictures.....
