Well it's going to be 4" for a wilderness EDC. Now I need to choose a design. Thanks for all your input.

4 inch blade, so it can reach to the bottom of a jar of peanut butter.
Seriously.

I voted for a 4 inch blade ... But I did order a 5
Inch polaris from scott gossman the orignal
Design is a 4 inch blade... My thoughts for the
Added inch were that I could baton if needed
Skin and process game,do food prep, and camp
Chores with the same knife ! So I decided to
Ask scott to make it and he did. so now will
See if im right !

Seems that about 90% of my woods knives have a 4" blade, seems like the perfect size for me. Can't wait to see what you come up with Ray!

100mm (4") for me.
Blades that see most belt time in that size:
Fallkniven F1(3G) & Nl5
Busse CABS
Esee4 plus a few customs of that size.

My favorite is one of Adventure Sworn's woodlore type knives. Blade is 4 inches, but the handle just melds with your hand and is great to work with.

around the farm 3.5" - 4"
outside farm ground 4" - 6"

I've found a 5" to offer a good performance for my needs but it is slightly too big and cumbersome around daily farm activities.

I voted 95 mm
Which is 3 1/2 "

But 4" is good too

Keep the handle at least 4 1/4"

I didn't vote because I prefer a 4"+ blade for wilderness carry. For EDC around town I've found that the sheath makes more of a difference then the length of the blade. By that I mean that a knife/sheath with a thin profile that is easily accessible is preferred over one that "sticks out" so that it is noticeable by others or one with a retention system that requires extra effort.

for urban EDC, I'll take a folder. Three inch blade is fine.

For outdoors though, 4 inch is better, and 6 is even 'mo betta'. :D

as to design, the Bushcrafter I bought from you last December is just about perfect. :D

5 inch or more but not over 7 inches is prefered for wilderness applications.

It seems so far that a lot of you guys like at least a 4" or larger blade for the woods. I was going to try to keep this knife smallish. I'd also like to sell it to those who carry a fixed blade in their daily life. Maybe I need to do two separate knives. One for wilderness EDC and another for urban EDC. I have a lot to think about! Thanks for all the votes so far. Keep them coming.

To me "Wilderness" and "EDC" are two different things.

How many of us are in the wilderness every day?

I would suspect not many.

For "Wilderness" I suspect a 4" blade would work for most folks.

For "EDC" I would suggest a 2.5" blade so it is legal everywhere.

I chose 3.5. But this does depend on overall length of the knife as well. If it is urban, the knife should be 6" or under in overall length (my opinion of course).

Stan, I wasn't saying that people spend everyday in the wilderness. I was thinking about a knife that you'd carry for everyday that you are in the wilderness. When I go camping, I always take more than one knife or cutting tool but I only have one that I carry on me everyday at all times. That's what I'm talking about when I say wilderness EDC.

One thing that I will throw out here. A three or three and a half incher is plenty as long as it has a full sized handle. So often I see shorter blades with three finger handles and they simply aren't up to the task.
I agree. I bring different sizes depending on my mood but I find my Izula 2 to be with me the most and plenty of blade at 2 1/2 inches. It's a full size handle for my hands.

Yup. I generally have a 4inch+ bladed knife in my pack but I always have my Izula 2 in my pocket.

I voted 3.5". Four inch bladed knives are great, I've used plenty of them, but for my I really don't loose much dropping 1/2 inch and 3.5" is the legal blade limit in WV.
