Ray, it's worth considering that as a small volume maker your optimum strategy may be to seek out an under served niche rather than broad consensus.

Stan, I wasn't saying that people spend everyday in the wilderness. I was thinking about a knife that you'd carry for everyday that you are in the wilderness. When I go camping, I always take more than one knife or cutting tool but I only have one that I carry on me everyday at all times. That's what I'm talking about when I say wilderness EDC.

Gotcha!

Thanks!

-Stan

I couldn't find where to check 17".

I'm always carrying a 3 - 4" folder, so I'm looking for something heavier and at least 4" in a fixed blade. The FB I carry most often is 4 1/4" and 9/32" thick.
Same here I edc 4in. Folders so my perfect woods edc would be somewhere between 4-5 in. Right now my favorite is 4 9/16

I voted for the 4" model based on the pole label/name, but afer reading your post, I would rather it be a 3" blade for general daily carry.

been waiting a long time for something from Ray to pop up!

I prefer 4.5 or just under. I also prefer a large handle.

Can't wait!

Well, for wilderness EDC, i usually have more than 1 blade with me.

That said, if for the sake of discussion, i'm only going to carry 1 knife, a wide-bladed 6"-length will serve nicely (if 1/4" and ground properly). I've always (going on 30 years of wilderness activity) gravitated toward thicker knives (though sometimes using longer blades sometimes opting for shorter). I've used thinner knives (Ka-Bar and such), but prefer the reassuring heft of 1/4". A knife in this overall size range is easy to carry - adequate without being too large to ensure ease of carry.

Alot of folks in the bushcraft community tend to "look down" on the folks who prefer thicker/larger knives - kinda like some "newb disease" or mis-informed anomaly. Criticism, based solely on that criteria, illustrates *nothing* but the limited experience/knowledge and ignorance of the critic.

So Ray, bring your extensive art and skill to bear on your project, i'm sure it will be nothing short of superb.

4"-6" depending on how you use it
Much smaller than 4.5" makes battoning harder and much more than 5.5 make whittling a bit more challenging. If I were to use the knife more for carving and food prep, then I'd go to 4." If it were mostly for fire prep, then I'd go with 6."

My ideal, do-it-all woods knife is a 5" drop point with full flat grind.

I voted for 3.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who REALLY hikes is going to be looking for something longer than 4inches. It all comes down to weight. Most times at camp you can easily find wood lying about for fires where chopping or batoning is overkill. Many AT hikers will only carry a razor blade.

Maybe Im wrong, but I feel there are too many people who give the wrong impression when referring to wilderness as their backyard. Some seem to consider "camp" chores to be hacking a bush on their property.

That is just my opinion. I roll with a bk11 but would love a custom knife for hiking. I have carried a kabar USMC just to see if I would ever find use for a larger blade and never used it for something that a small blade couldn't handle.

I'm in with the 4" crowd. Anything too large (both in blade length and handle width) is a pain to clean out game animals (speaking from experience). I will say though, Don't lose sight of a good camp knife. I usually carry a 4" blade for most things, but I ALWAYS carry a 6" - 7" blade in my pack for larger camp chores (a knife by Mr. Laconico himself I must add - Luv those carbon fiber scales Ray!!).
