I'm not a knife-fighting expert by any means, but my instincts and accumulated knowledge say that people not trained in knife-fighting tend to slash, not stab in a self-defense situation, which means that blade length is not a big concern. Is she trained to use a knife defensively? If she's not, I'd question the suitability of her (or anyone untrained) carrying a knife for
primary SD. Personally, I carry a knife first-and-foremost as a cutting tool and for
last-ditch-only SD, and a 2oz can of pepper spray on my belt for primary SD. YMMV of course, but there's my $0.02. Good luck!
I would say show her some photos of knives and let her decide what SHE likes.
+1, couldn't agree more. If a person doesn't like a knife, chances are good they won't have it when they
really need it. My girlfriend carries a Dragonfly G-10 and loves it, but she does NOT carry it as a self-defense tool. Nevertheless, it feels like a much larger knife in-hand and is easy to control for a blade of its size. Also, does she have a size preference? How about legalities for carry/ownership in her area? Some other options I'd look into are:
- Kershaw Leek: Assisted-opening and very sharp out-of-box with a pointy (but delicate tip), but I find the slim handle difficult to keep a grip on (especially in stainless steel).
- Benchmade Mini-Griptilian: Manual opening, but very fast to deploy with practice. Handle is thicker/bulkier than other options; I never forgot I was carrying it.
- Spyderco Delica: IIRC, this one is recommended by Michael Janich. Very easy to open and use. I'd recommend the FFG version (slices better, sharper tip).
- Kershaw Clash: Assisted-opening, comfy handle (at least for my smaller hands).
