My buddys wife wants to start carring a knife. I gave her some suggestions, but I would like your input. Any ladys out there that could give input on his that would be great. I think she just wants to put it in her purse because she is a little lady. Any input would be awesome.

Thanks everyone

I would say show her some photos of knives and let her decide what SHE likes.

Benchmade mini griptillian, comes in pink along with many other colors.

I don't th ink the color matters. She really wants something that is fast and easy to use. Maybe a spring assist, speed safe, easy opening. I I would have to add that its for protection not for normal tasks

I'm not a knife-fighting expert by any means, but my instincts and accumulated knowledge say that people not trained in knife-fighting tend to slash, not stab in a self-defense situation, which means that blade length is not a big concern. Is she trained to use a knife defensively? If she's not, I'd question the suitability of her (or anyone untrained) carrying a knife for primary SD. Personally, I carry a knife first-and-foremost as a cutting tool and for last-ditch-only SD, and a 2oz can of pepper spray on my belt for primary SD. YMMV of course, but there's my $0.02. Good luck!

+1, couldn't agree more. If a person doesn't like a knife, chances are good they won't have it when they really need it. My girlfriend carries a Dragonfly G-10 and loves it, but she does NOT carry it as a self-defense tool. Nevertheless, it feels like a much larger knife in-hand and is easy to control for a blade of its size. Also, does she have a size preference? How about legalities for carry/ownership in her area? Some other options I'd look into are:
  • Kershaw Leek: Assisted-opening and very sharp out-of-box with a pointy (but delicate tip), but I find the slim handle difficult to keep a grip on (especially in stainless steel).
  • Benchmade Mini-Griptilian: Manual opening, but very fast to deploy with practice. Handle is thicker/bulkier than other options; I never forgot I was carrying it.
  • Spyderco Delica: IIRC, this one is recommended by Michael Janich. Very easy to open and use. I'd recommend the FFG version (slices better, sharper tip).
  • Kershaw Clash: Assisted-opening, comfy handle (at least for my smaller hands).

It would help if we knew your price range.

I think I would go for the ZT 0400. the handle is very nice and grippy, the blade is long enough to be useful, it is black so it hides away in a purse pretty well, it can be had for under 100, it is speed assisted, and you can't beat the warranty.

I am a woman, and I carry custom knives. I also like Strider knives as well, and ALWAYS have my PT CC Dog Paws with me.

My wife carries a Kershaw Leek every day, and loves it. I recommend the same for yours, at least for a good starting point.

It really depends on what she intends to use it for, but of the number of knives I've recommended for non knife types, the Victorinox Spartan is the one that seems most used and appreciated, especially for being stashed in a purse/bag

+1 on letting her pick up her own knife.
Still, I think the SD factor should weigh absolutely zero when choosing a knife.
If she wants a weapon for self defense, she should go for spray, especially if she has no training in using a knife.
But this could be a good opportunity to drag her to the dark side :-) so I suggest getting her some SAK + pepper spray...if she agrees, of course. If she prefers a folder, I would sure show her a pic of the Dragonfly (seems like u can at least "push" her in some direction), and I would also avoid any assisted opening, but this is just my 2 cents.

I agree that you should let her pick her own knife. However, I would steer her away from the dreaded pink. My wife was sold on pink until I explained that a knife is a serious tool and should not look like a toy (just like a gun). As such, she has purchased knives with more "traditional" colors.

KW now has the great-looking blue BM 530 that REI used to carry.

Another suggestion, for anyone looking for a thin, light-weight folder with rust-proof blade: the Salt I, available with black or yellow handles. I like these even more than the Delicas.

What knife would you suggest to a man?

Suggest that one.

Women are capable of appreciating and using a knife as a tool, you know. For many of them....their primary concern isn't how shiny and pink and pretty the knife is! They are concerned with function! Can you believe it?!? :D

Dang....if I gave my wife a pink knife, she'd cut me with it.
