What's your sharpening set up?

What is the coffee mug for? Or is it for coffee and I'm missing the joke?

The coffee mug turned upside down reveals an un glazed ceramic that will sharpen softer steels like 1095 etc. You can also use a plate or saucer with the same open ceramic ring with no glaze on them. Use like any sharpening stone. Works great by the way.

Blessings,

Omar

I wonder if I can get the art teacher at the school I work at to fire a small slab of stoneware for that purpose. Hrmmmmm. Could be a good project/test.

I have an 8" Norton India combo, xc, c, f, ef, DMT Diasharps, a Sharpmaker with all 4 stones, and some plain leather strops. I can get done what I need to with these.

Edge pro for shears
A variety of stones and most any car window for showin off.

Jet wet wheel sharpener, 2x42 belt sander, paper wheels (3), Edge Pro apex, Wicked Edge with all the trimmings, Sharpmaker, various oil stones/water stones strops and compounds.....

What else am I going to spend my vast fortune on, food?

HwangJino, what is that weird brown stone with the grooves in it? The stone in question is at the front of the tub in your picture.

I have two full sets of Lansky guided systems. One is diamond and the other is regular + the 1000 and 2000 grit ceramics.

The I have coarse, medium, fine and ultra fine EZE lap diamond benchstones. Rounding it all off is the Lansky Combo stone which is a two sided oil stone.

Old fine oilstone

400 / 1000 / 2000 / 6000 Japanese whetstones

Wet/Dry Sandpaper on mousepads

WorkSharp Knife & Tool Sharpener

Loaded and unloaded leather strops

Smooth butcher's steel

Except for my Japanese knives, which I do exclusively on the waterstones, I tend to use the WSKYS the most. Quick, easy, and sharp, sharp, sharp.

I'll touch up edges on the steel and a progression of strops.

DMT diasharp diamond hones 120-8000 mesh
Nubatama waterstones 180, 220, 400, 2x 1000, 1200, 5000
Naniwa chosera full line
Naniwa SS 3k-12k
Ohishi waterstones 600-6000
2x72 KMG grinder
2x72 TW-90 grinder
Polishing wheels

And a few strops with 1 Micron diamond and .5 Micron Chromium oxide.

Basically I'm using Japanese stones, sometimes natural, sometimes artificial though lately I have been trying out natural stones more local to me - relatively as I'm trying to dial in more and more to my home location - so it means stones originating from as far a-flung as the south of Germany to central Sweden and the Ardene. I will sometimes strop an axe, knives or carving implements but never plane blades or chisels. All that said there are two related elements left out of the discussion as far as I can see, heavy grinding, there I am using one of two frame mounted foot driven sandstones in water, the other is stone maintenance and for this I use a poured concrete tile out back with carborundum or aluminum oxide powder of various grit if I want to speed the process up to flatten the stones on an ongoing basis or sometimes I will break out a lapping plate with a low grit wet/dry sandpaper on top.

Sharpmaker for a long time with the UF and diamond stones+ about 6 strops with all different kinds of compounds. I was getting good results with this. I got an Edge Pro Apex with the shapton glass stones about a month ago AND WOW. My sharping has gone to the next level shaving sharp and mirror polish. Now just a touch up with the sharpmaker and to knock off the burr while working on the EP.

I have a Wicked Edge Pro Pack I which I use to re-profile edges or on very dull knives. I also have Sharp Maker that I use for touch ups, mostly with the ultra fine stones.

Once you've experienced the ease, precision and results of this combo, it would be hard to go back wouldn't it?:D:thumbup:

Here is my 1980 Norton md. 313 Tri-Hone with a fine India stone showing on top. This size stones are generous making for easy sharpening. The other stones are just over kill. DM

I have a problem, I have WAY too much stuff for sharpening knives with.

Power sharpening:

Paper wheels and a Kalamazoo 1" x 42" belt machine. The number of belts I have is just stupid! Mostly I use a progression of Trixact A20, A16, A6, and A3. I'll finish with linen loaded with 3µ BC, linen w/ 1µ cBN, and leather w/ .1µ cBN. This does a great job and can vary based on the knife and what it will be doing.

EdgePro Pro machine that I have moded a bit. I have a lot of stones for it as follows:

Diamonds:

Atoma 140 on 1x6 plate.
Atoma 1200 on 1x6 plate.
DMT X Coarse on 2x6 plate.
DMT Coarse on 2x6 plate.
DMT Fine on 2x6 plate.
DMT X Fine on 2x6 plate.

Mounted stones all 1x6.

Sigma Power II 13000

This doesn't include the stropping stuff.

I have countless stones I've acquired over the years, old wet stones, oil stones, along with a host of steels and strops but the core of my kit is in this box. I also have a pretty nice variety of diamond hones also.

Even with an Edge Pro, Sharpmaker, and Lansky, I still do 90% of my sharpening free hand.
