What's your sharpening set up?

Edge pro w/

atoma 140
nubatama bamboo 150
chosera 400,800,1k,2k,5k,10k
ozuku asagi jnat
some balsa and some microfelt strops with cbn spray

I have countless stones I've acquired over the years, old wet stones, oil stones, along with a host of steels and strops but the core of my kit is in this box. I also have a pretty nice variety of diamond hones also.

Even with an Edge Pro, Sharpmaker, and Lansky, I still do 90% of my sharpening free hand.

I feel that for anybody who goes camping regularly, or backpacking, or goes on any trip with any common knife should at least know how to put a reasonable edge on by hand. That's the Eagle Scout in me anyway.

I have a tormek t7, wicked edge and a sharpmaker. All have their place. The Tormek is really fast and with just a little practice puts an amazing edge on.

He said he still does 90% of his sharpening by free hand. DM

Thanks, I've been free hand sharpening since the early 70s, I've used my edge pro maybe a dozen times in the last 8 years, free hand comes with practice, you develop muscle memory, you learn to maintain your angle through repetition, I couldn't even count the hundreds if not thousands of hours I've practiced free hand, I sharpen everyday, it's my relaxation, I sit in front of the tv for hours at a time and just sharpen.

It's just like therapy. :)

My sharpening shop consists of a bench with a Harbour Freight 6 inch buffer with paper wheels sitting on it. An old Arkansas "whet rock" that is older than I am and is canoe shaped from years of use. Three DMT 8inch stones in course, fine, and extra fine. Two leather strops and three balsa strops. Various Wet/dry sandpaper glued to paint sticks in 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 grit that I use like a file. Red, brown, black, green, white, and gold strop compounds. One box of various sizes of band aids , and a can of WD-40.

Blessings,

Omar

I like your grinder set up, does it use standard 2"X42" belts? And what kind of motor controller are you using?

I've got all the stuff to make a belt grinder, 'cept the time... ;)

I use an edge pro Professional....
Shapton Stones 120-30,000
Atoma Plates 140-1200
Ken Schwartz Diamond Films 15micron - 0.5micron (mounted on float glass)
CBN 1micron - 0.1micron (on kangaroo)
Polycrystalline spray 0.5mcron - 0.025micron (on nanocloth)
Boron Carbide 3k , 5k , 8k (on kangaroo)
Japanese Naturals

I have 5 more diamond films , 10 more Japanese Naturals , and more 4 or 5 CBN / Roo strops coming from Ken Schwartz.

There is a third drawer in the toolbox , it has Jnats in it , but I only have 2 right now while I wait for the other 10 to come in :) Right now I have the drawers set up like this..

Sythetics
Naturals
Diamonds
Strops

With misc/compounds up top
:D

Grinder is 2x42 from Norm Coote, I'm using Norton Blaze Belts. Motor Controller is a KBDA -27 D with trim pot for manual speed control

My set up while I'm away from the house. More accurately, while i'm in Maryland. The tea cooler is a must for any good edge.

Sadden, I hoped you'd post your setup here. Still impressive every time I see the pics. You're a sharpening fiend, dude! :D Seriously, great setup.

A Norton 4000/8000 stone, a Stropman strop, and a Sharp Maker. I use the strop all the time, the stone and the sharp maker occasionally. All my bigger knives go on the stone, I just use the SM for SAKs and such.

for doing a full polish start to finish on a new knife I use the following
220 Shapton pro (to do rough metal removing)
400 Chosera (probably my favorite synthetic stone)
Amakusa natural (cuts like an 800 polishes like a 1000)
1000 chosera (polish level closer to 2000 if done properly)
Blue Aoto natural stone (great burr refinement from the thick mud this stone builds up)
5000 shapton pro (I only use this on softer steel (60hrc and below) because of the stone's hardness)
6000 Arashiyama (excellent stone, very soft great polish and toothyness for a synthetic)

from here I either go to a 10k Naniwa super stone for a glossy mirror synthetic polish followed by diamond slurry balsa strops
Or I move to natural stones for the best possible edge or when polishing a knife clad in softer steel

Ozuku Shobu (leaving an extremely aggressive 8k finish)
Jyunsyouhonyama (closer to a 12k finish however not the most consistent- I only use this on micro bevels that wont be very visible)
Red Ohira Tomae with Nakayama Tomae nagura (the best possible brightness and contrast between soft and hard steel in my collection)
