What's Your Specialty?

What has become most interesting to me lately is collecting relatively inexpensive customs (>$300). This usually means buying knives made by new or less well known makers. To a person with my budget, it makes more sense than buying an incredibly expensive knife from somebody just because they have gotten a reputation and a long waiting list.

What I said is not a put down of famous makers, it more a statement of my financial necessities.

I started out collecting large fixed blades, mainly Cold Steel knives. Now my collection is around two-thirds folders.I have Emersons, Microtech, REKAT, CRKT and quite a few Spyserco's. I enjoy getting a limited run or a discontinued model.

Big production folders and big production bowies. The higher the quality the cheaper it will cost you in the long run! Big knives get big jobs done quickly and effectively and will stand up to demanding tasks. R.E.K.A.T. and Cold Steel---You can't go wrong with the big ones made by these guys!

I prefer accumulator to collector but I do own many more knives than I need. They get little use, but they aren't NIB. Started out with Benchmade folders. But for awhile now I've been into inexpensive handmade fixed blades. I gravitate towards micarta and kydex. Dozier to begin with, then Livesay, now Ray Kirk. I also like large fixed blades. I recently bought a Busse BM.

I started off with production folders until I was bitten by the
custom bug:D I now enjoy both custom folders and fixed blades from
the tactical persuasion. I seem to enjoy blades currently by
Terzuola, Lightfoot, & Carson. Hopefully the future will bring more money for more customs from other makers:)

AF posted: I prefer accumulator to collector ...

Accumulator I guess would be the best because there are way too many types of knives out there to actually specialize in.

I suppose I will eventually end up in the accumulator category once I really get started.

Just like my first pair of brass knuckles, my Sebenza has given me the itch now too!

AS your Typical NEWBIE, I am into tactical folders, As long as they are from the better made Mass producers. If it were not for some stupid reason called MONEY, I would have every Dalton, MT, MOD, Emerson, Benchmade,ETC and then off to the customs, BUT I am tired of sleeping in the garage, so I am a Drooler for now....wolf:(

I buy mostly tac folders and hideout fixed blades make there way to the toybox every now and then. I have a MT LUDT and an Emerson Mach 1 on the way, that should give you an idea of what I like.

Multibladed slipjoint folders, khukuris from HI, ethnic blades (bolos, etc.), bowies and anything else that strikes my fancy.

I have an assortment of folders and fixed blades I have accumulated over the years, with an emphasis on utility and economy, but HI Khukris are the only ones I actively collect. Just love knives that can chop!:D And, as a hillbilly, the romance of owning knives made in the foothills of the highest mountains in the world has a strong appeal.

I guess my focus would have to be on higher end production one handed folders.
Second would have to be production fixed blades of various sizes, from neckers to Bowies.
Third(and fast becoming my favorite now) is hand made fixed blades. My collection of these is kind of modest at less than 15. And most of these are from very talented local makers.

I floundered about for a time, thinking that tacticals were pretty awesome. Then I just grew tired of them. I've since gone back to the old ways for the most part, preferring a fixed blade on my belt and a slipjoint in my pocket. The slipjoints are the ones that I hold close to my heart. I've accumulated about 15 of them in the last month, and don't see any end in sight.

I am collecting military and fighting knives/weapons. So far I only have obne, a Ka-Bar short. But it was an x-mas gift from my girlfriend, so that is a good start if you ask me!

It seems I spend my $$ on knife making stuff instead of knives, though I intend to purchase a Magna in the fall. Obviously that will be a user :)

So far, since I have so few knives, I have been "collecting" them to serve certain purposes. e.g. camping, EDC, etc. I look forward to a time when I have "more than I need" and I can specialize.

I collect mainly quality production folders. (REKAT, Micro-tech,Emerson, Spyderco.....)
I like folders just because in the *^$@&^ state you can't conceal a fixed blade. Don't like customs because they cost as much guns.

My collection, such as it is, is all auto's. A little bit of everything, Italians, Tacticals, Custom's, and yes, even a few clones! When I first started collecting, I wanted to get an example of every blade style, and opening style (button, scale, lever, ect). The more I got into the hobby, the more I realized, I'd never get them all. Everytime I even come close, someone comes out with something new! I love it!
As to why I collect auto's, it's purely the "gadget factor". They are great toys! With a few exceptions, most of my knives are not users, they hang on the wall in display cases to be admired only. The few I keep out, are mostly just to play with, to satisfy the "inner child".

"Bigger boys need bigger toys!" :D

Collection wise, it's mainly Benchmades - around 70 of them, plus a few Pacific Cutlery models -- still need some of the early Balis. BM is introducing so many new models it's hard to keep up. Also have a selected number of other makers, a few customs and a custom fixed blade coming. Sure is fun!! Have met some great folks through this hobby :)

Dark/Dann,

I saw your posts here, and in a weakened state of mind, I'll tell ya that I have an original Cold Steel "Master Tanto" in San Mai with the original black box, paperwork, and both factory sheaths, leather and Kydex...(Weren't they the first with Kydex 15 years ago?)

I don't need the money, but the knife doesn't "fit" in my collection....enough said.

Fixed blade fighters, RMK/AMK mostly...anything with a sharpened upper edge, 5"-6" mostly, Applegate/Fairbairn Daggers, Gerber MK II's, boot/chute/sub-hilt double edge knives...Randall and Al Mar fighters, Loveless style knives too...

Why? Because the best defense is a good offense....and I'm as offensive as they come... My knives are for purely "social" work, and given half a chance, I'm going to defend myself with "extreme prejudice"...lol

Local makers.

There are more makers than I suspected in Perth, and I seem to be coming across more every year. Not bad for the most isolated city in the world.

For now, they'll do for my knife wants.

Folks, take a look around - you'll more than likely find a number of local knifemakers who will be glad to not only sell you a knife, but swap stories (and maybe drink beer).
