When is a folder too big to pocket carry?

i have to agree it depends on the dress attire. If I am wearing light weight shorts or dress clothes then I usually go no larger then a 4" blade. In fact, my "dress knife" tends to be my Spyderco Civilian which is about as big and the maximum weight I'd want.

In everyday jeans BIGGER the better, I have no problems carrying big knives (Cold Steel XL Voyager 5 in CS Vaquero Grande 6" REKAT SIFU 5" Camillus Maxx 5.5") about the only large knife I have problems carrying is my Buck Strider its only a 4" blade but it is really "wide" to carry daily.

To me it is strictly a matter of comfort. If it is to big to be comfortable. It is to big.

I just started (read today) carrying two knives on me. I keep my ZT 0300 or Emerson CQC-15 in my front pocket. But since it is a bit large, and since I did get some odd stares at the sales meeting this morning when they handed out new laptops with bags and I whipped out the 300 to cut the tie strings off the bag, I've begun carrying my Mini Auto Presidio in my back LH pocket with the clip reversed so I can pull it out instead when I'm around some people.

Somewhere between 3"-4" is perfect with a little give and take on either end.....Ill go smaller than that but much bigger than 4" and why not just get a fixed blade?

Would you not get stares firing an auto? I don't use mine in meetings for that reason. It is strictly SAK.

"When you have to start dressing around your knife, its too big."

You mean I've been doing it wrong for all these years?. Seriously, I dress around my knife about 80-90% of the time.

When it's ucomfortable for me to put my hand in my carry pocket then it's too big. When I can get into and out of my pocket easily the knife is just right. The ZT0300 may be too big for dress slacks. I usually have jeans on though and I haven't had a problem yet.

I don't remember whether I've already replied to this thread... but a knife is too big for me to carry when it's no longer comfortable to have riding clipped to my pocket. I eschew belt sheaths, unless it's a fixed blade (in which case size is a different story altogether). I carry a big knife and a small, sheeple-friendly knife, so size is limited by what I feel like carrying.

With me, it is all about what I am comfortable carrying. I don't really care if people are offended or frightened by my Buck 110 or my other "scary" knives. I carry them as tools, use them as tools, and try my best to explain to others that they are tools.

I just had to deal with some idiot the other day at school. A couple of girls were baking cookies in our community kitchenette and couldn't get the dough open, so I offered my assistance with my SAK Farmer. The response? "Sure hope I don't piss you off!!" I can't imagine what they would have said if I had used the ClipHanger that was in my pocket, the Gerber Hinderer that was on my belt or the Kershaw Amphibian in my bag...

A few inches bigger than this and your going overboard...:D
