When is a folder too big to pocket carry?

Must fit in the pocket AND be comfortable at the same time. Large Sebbie and Mini Skirmish are about as large as I have carried comfortably.

it's all up to you ... if you think it's too big, then it's too big. Also might depend on how deep your pockets go

For me, thickness is the primary consideration. I don't really notice weight a whole lot, up to a certain point that I haven't found yet because I don't have a heavy enough folder. Length also isn't a big factor for me, as my longest folder is an Endura and I've never had a problem with it's length.

Also, similar to what someone said before me, if the knife scrapes up my hand when I get my phone out of my pocket (knife and phone almost always share my RFP), then I'll stop carrying it.

90% of the year, I'm in BDUs or blue jeans. I have been carrying my Demko Navajah every day since I got ... right front pocket. It has a 4.5" (.200 thick) blade and weighs in at 10.5oz and the size/weight doesn't bother me at all.

When the ladies ask, "Is that a big knife in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?"

I found that 4" or 4 oz is the upper limit of comfortable pocket carry. I've carried an 11 oz knife in my pocket and it felt like a brick when I walked.

IMHO 8-12 oz, depending on the belt, is the upper limit for belt carry. Anything over that requires a tool belt or just put the thing in a toolbox.

For me anything that violates the knife policy on campus is to big:P but for the most part i like a blade between 3.3-3.75in weight doesnt matter as much to me.

I don't mind carrying big (ie: thick, stout), heavy folders, but I don't like using blades over around 3.5"-3.75". Weight, width, and thickness aren't really concerns for me.

I've always been happy to try and carry as large a knife as I possibly can. To this end I took the Ontario Hossom Retribution I, a knife that is 6" long in the closed position, over 10 ounces in weight, and very, very thick. I thinned the handles down a good bit, and attached a foldover, deep-carry pocket clip. I carried this knife with no problems for a period of three months, and would not hesitate to carry it again. Bear in mind I normally wear kaki type pants with deep pockets and slash pockets. The largest knife I have and carry, as far as being the longest, is a Darrel Ralph HTM Madd Maxx which really carries well due to it's thiness.

It's a trade-off between all day comfort and utility. I have EDC's a BM 940 for years -- since the 940 was released in 154CM. I have tried the BM 806D2 and the BM 710 and both felt like bricks compared to the 940. I also tried smaller with the BM 760 and it lost on utility. Every experiment ended up with me still carrying the old 940. That's for urban carry.

Off-road I have carried both of the above larger BM knives and an RSK Mk1 Griptilian in addition to a fixed blade. For me urban carry doesn't require a large blade, the woods are potentially more stressful.

4 inch blades are my limit. I find larger folders look like your compensating for something. This may vary depending on the size of the user. I think is important that the blade doesn't look awkward in the hand ymmv

Never. Unless the MAN, passes the laws to make you more civil.

I carry these in rotation with Recon 1's. 4" Voyager. Manix's and whatever else depending on the legality...when I do carry "small" it's a Rajah 3 that chopped and tuned.

Charlie Mike that knife is the bee's knee's I have being trying to get him to make a Rajah in 154cm, it'll happen, I just need the lottery's help....

I love that knife, if you ever need it to go somewhere, PM me.

Each time I got less than flattering remarks about the large knife I presented in public to use, it was simply because it was the only knife I had on me. I was simply trying to 'simplify' my life - and carry only one. More is more better... Anyway, I have since remedied that as I had done for years with the slippie/SAK and Buck 110 - I carry a smaller 'sheeple-friendly' knife and whatever else I deem necessary. I usually wear cargo pants - long or short - so my pockets have the room. The latest 'little' knife is the Boker Plus CLB Titan SubCom - it joins the SAK Farmer, Boker Tree Brand classic slippies, etc, in that role.

Good thing - I have added some larger really nice knives (ZT-301, CRK 'zaan, etc.). I carry what fits - size-wise, a dedicated user, and a sheeple-friendly smaller knife now. Thanks for the remarks... and reviving this Lazarus-like thread.
