When people criticize how to spend money

Im tired of having to justify to people why i spend my hard earned cash on knives. Mind you, these are the same people that have multiple pairs of expensive nike's or tote expensive purses. I enjoy collecting knives, just how they enjoy collecting shoes and clothes. Just because knife collecting isnt a "mainstream" hobby, doesnt give people the right to criticize my hobby. Is it just me?!?!?

When they question you, ask to see their watch / phone / wallet/ shoes. Their watch is probably 80+, the phone 300+ the wallet 60+ and their shoes 150+ they would have something expensive they own, just ask them why they spent so much

It's seems most people think anything too expensive if they aren't into it, everytime I pay more than $200.00 for a knife his favorite saying is it gold with diamond handles, yet he thinks nothing about upgrading his alienware gaming computer every two years at $4000.00 to $6000.00 or paying $1200.00 fora custom leather seat and grip covers for his motorcycle.

Just answer any questions you get with "because I want to." Pretty hard to argue with that.

just tell them if they don't shut their pie hole that you're going to cut up their lacoste polo shirt and turn it into a tank top.

I like to give them a bit of my personal info and say, " Well, I already have 7 million in my retirement funds/accounts so a couple hundred for a knife won't break the bank. :) That usually works.

As long as I wasn't telling them I spent this money, and they are just being nosey. I usually say, that's fine if that's what you think, but that's not how I think, and what you think doesnt effect how I think, and what you think doesn't effect my world, I create my world and that's fine. What you think of me is none of my business.
Usually something in this nature and they shut up.

I get that from time to time and blow it off with, "Yeah, but it's cheaper than...(insert any of the dozens of hobbies that cost more)." I try to make a joke out of it, because it's really no one's business how I spend my money.

I think that is one of those "if you have to ask, you wouldn't understand" situations. Some people will never get it.

Usually if you describe you are a knife collector, it makes sense. If someone showed me a stamp that was worth 1000 and mentioned he is collector, I would probably also drool over it in appreciation for what it is. Give them a quick run down of why it cost that, premium steel, titanium frame lock, bla bla bla bla.

If they still don't listen, cut their shoes laces under the table during lunch break . . .

Whenever I get asked that by my mom I usually respond with "At least I'm not spending my money on drugs". That usually works.

That used to be true.......used to be. *sigh*

I just don't go there with folks that don't understand.

The guys that work for me get introduced to better knives as time goes by, and I push them into service as "ham fisted users" to test the knives I make; using knives as we do on the job site, they start to understand the difference between mediocre knives and ones that work very well.

The funny thing is, the guys who get it will spend the money to buy a good knife of their own, whereas many of my hunting buddies (with more expendable income) still struggle trying to cut with cheap knives from the big retailers.

As stated above, I rarely discuss knife prices with folks that don't get it.

There are so many expensive brands of handbags, shoes, watches, that will dwarf our hobby of collecting easily. Just search Hermes Birkin, Patek philippe watches, Hermes man shoes...just to name a few. Never worry about the collection prices, if there are people paying probably 10-100 times the price for slippers. :D

Pretty much everyone has some item that has special meaning/reverence to them

Knives/pens/wallets/purses/clothes/guns/stamps/cards/whatever

Just cause knives aren't their thing, doesn't mean it is any less usual than the other crap we could collect

But knives are also tools, and along with the enjoyment of collecting, they have a utilitarian value which most collecting lacks...and have a great deal of durability

But anyways, I just like them works

True, I went to a Mont Blanc store a few weeks ago and I asked how much her most expensive pen was. She said, "$13,500" I was joking when I asked if she had two in stock. She took me seriously and I told her, "I'm just kidding."

My mother has a 600 purse and a 200 matching wallet.
But that is for Winter use only. Haha.

Agreed.
I used to collect watches and got that reaction a few times. "You only have 2 wrists", blah,
blah. Best part is, I don't have to justify anything to anyone.

Neighbor of mine down in Miami, has a Ferrari 458 Spider, and a nice BMW SUV. He is gone a lot, traveling. I think he spends too much money on transportation that he does not fully utilize!!!!!!
