When people criticize how to spend money

Like others have said its my business what I spent my hard earned cash on. People spend there money on silly things more often then what I would per year on my hobby, like smoking, drinking, coffee for work, take out food and these are all items that are disposable so I do not understand why people would criticize for spending money on a knife, unless it was someone who knows you. And you were struggling with bills or something along those lines. Other then that, should be what makes you happy.

Why tell people how much you spend on knives? I've never been criticized spending for spending money on knives, but then again I don't go around sharing how much I spent on my Sebenza. If you open the subject up to discussion that is an entirely reasonable and foreseeable response.

Nobody criticizes me for how much I spend on knives because they don't know.

Here it is...maturity and commonsense all wrapped up into one short sentence. To which I might only add, "Because it's none of their business".

And here it is again...;)

I don't usually share how much I spent on any certain knife and if I do I leave it ambiguous by saying something like it cost a couple hours of overtime. The questions I get usually center around why I need more than one. To that I say, in most cases, need had nothing to do with it. I just wanted this knife or that knife. Kind of ends it right there if there is even any questions. I don't make it a habit of showing people my knives since it never comes up in normal conversation. The only people that know I'm into knives is family and close friends and they discovered long ago that I'm a little weird. My knife hobby is the least of their worries :D

Im tired of having to justify to people why i spend my hard earned cash on knives. Mind you, these are the same people that have multiple pairs of expensive nike's or tote expensive purses. I enjoy collecting knives, just how they enjoy collecting shoes and clothes. Just because knife collecting isnt a "mainstream" hobby, doesnt give people the right to criticize my hobby. Is it just me?!?!?

Of course it is not just you. There are millions of people that get criticized for whatever they happen to do as a hobby or for their collections. You are also doing the same thg, pointing out that some folks collect purses, watches, stamps, coins, guns, knives, shoes, bugs, pens, tattoos, etc. Remember, what other people think of you is NONE of your business.

If someone asks how much a knife costs me, I tell them.

When they say something stupid, I tell them how much I spent on knives in the last year.

They usually quit talking after that.

Couple years ago I bought a used Porsche 911 for 40K. All I heard from office mates was "how could you afford that" and "you must be rich".

Then I asked each of them what their SUVs and Lexus' cost, and they admitted the costs were the same or higher. But there is a myth that a 911, even a used one, is a rich man's car.

People need to focus on their own costs, and not on other peoples.

I do catch it, every once in a while from co-workers, etc when they see me with an expensive knife, but it's all in fun, mostly. Most everyone wastes money on unnecessary expenditures. That's just like I can't see giving $30,000 for a vehicle, as a matter of fact, I hate to buy anything I can't pay cash for, as I am allergic to payments. So, I drive older rigs, and if I don't have the cash I don't buy it, be it a knife or gun or car, clothes, etc.

But once in a while, I need to be brought into check, as I realize the stupidity of my purchases. Hobbies are ok, obsessions are not ok, or they become your god. And the Lord said thou shalt have no others gods before me.

Which reminds me of another verse: Matthew 6:19, 20, 21
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth, no rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Now, everyone is guilty of storing up treasures, that will just be left for others to fight over, after they are gone. I am as guilty as anyone, else.

Anyway, sometimes I need a reality check, myself, because I have found the more stuff I buy, the less I am thrilled with each new purchase.

I simply ask what they spend their money on. When they reply i just tell them i am into knives. Not motorcross or video games or expensive clothing. Just a few examples i have heard haha. Its our money not theirs.

Amen to that.

On a more non-theological note, have you ever been criticized for how much you spend on other people?

I don't give a rats hairy butt what people think of me, my knives, or how I spend MY money. And I certainly don't feel the need to justify myself in any way to other people.

If someone who is genuinely interested in knives asks me a genuine question about my knives, I will answer them. And it's not uncommon for a person interested in knives to ask "How much did that cost?", after all, if they like the knife they might be interested in buying one. Of course not everyone interested in knives has the same level of interest. Some people like expensive customs, and some like gas station folders.

If someone reacts in a negative way or says something derogatory after I tell them how much I paid for a knife, I simply walk away without saying a word, or I simply ignore them. I consider anyone who would judge me for how I spend MY money to be a jerk, and I won't waste my time discussing the matter any further with them. I couldn't care less about changing their mind or showing them what hypocrites they are. My time is to valuable to waste on such people.

I hate when i buy a new knife and my familys says" you already have so many" its what i like stop questioning it

Everyone has something they go high end in and pay ridiculous prices in for some type of item. If you play the stereotypes girls will buy designer clothes and purses. Guys will put it all into a bigger purchase in form of a car. In reality I find it to be more spread out in how we spend our money.

Take me for example, I love higher end sunglasses and I like my Oakley, Raybans, etc. Luckily I've been able to get them cheap for the most part and only make a purchase once a year or couple years at the most. I own a higher end Citizen Eco-drive watch, one of their lowest end models but it still retails for $100+ that I picked up for less than half of retail price that I picked up because I got tired of replacing batteries and junk watches when they broke. If that watch makes it past the warrenty I have on it, it already paid for itself consider how many watches I would have gone through already. Than we have my smartphone and like most people those things are expensive. So if your looking at retail prices which I didn't pay for these items it come to around 1k some days for just those 3 items that I have on me watch, sunglasses, phone. That's pretty expensive and I am definitely not the only person who has a setup like this.

For me though I can justify this as those items I use on a daily basis. The sunglasses I try to pick up when their cheap, buy 1 get 1 free and clearanced out for 2 titanium alloy frame Oakleys. Lets just say that I payed about 1/6th of the price and felt like I was robbing them that day when I walked out the store :D. I typically wear polarized lens along with higher end sunglasses as they cut down drastically on the glare you see and allow you better visibility, this is especially true when it's raining as you can typically see better wearing them as long as it is still bright outside so I consider it a great driving aid. The watch was also bought on sale for around $60, and if it lasts as long as I hear than it pay for itself in a few years considering how many junk watches I go through in that amount of time. For a smartphone I actually use it as a smartphone and consider it a multi-tool as I use the thing to quickly check emails, gps, quickly grab information on the internet, calculator, use the wi-fo to diagnose networks, camera, paired up with OBD II device so I can read error codes in my car, etc. Though it definitely feels like I am the only person who does that with their smartphone most days, as I see most people using it for facebook, angry birds, and things such as that.

Though if push came to shove and someone asked me to justify why purchases and they didn't like my above answer, there is one simple truth to the matter. It's not their money if they don't like it too bad. As for knives I like what someone else said earlier, just call yourself a knife collector, the word collector has more of a positive/professional meaning associated with it and they probably won't hassle you as much.

Nobody criticizes me for how much I spend on knives because they don't know.

Well put, the only way people can know, is if you tell them. My close friends know my interests and I know theirs. As far as everyone else goes, I couldn't care less. It is funny though when someone wants to show off how great their 2$ gas station knife and you think to yourself, "they don't even know that they don't know".

I agree with all the above but I see it on the forum here in the axe/ tomahawk section. There the RMJs and Winklers are treated as such by some folks and the $30 Cold Steel Hawk virtues are extolled*!

(verb

praise enthusiastically.
"he extolled the virtues of the Russian peoples"
