When you drop a safe queen... on concrete...

Been there done that. Usually within 10 minutes of unboxing a new knife, I've managed to scratch, dent, or ding something.
Examples:
-BNIB PM2 Burple: 10 minutes ater unboxing dropped it with blade open--onto my 0801--chipping the edge. Tried to fix with a loaded strop and dulled the crap out of it.
-NIB Guardian 3 DLC: 10 minutes after unboxing, scratched the DLC to crap using a cheep Kydex sheath.
-LNIB Large Sebenza: Finally got my grail! Immediately upon unboxing, while setting it down on my work bench, caught the flat of the blade on the top of my Sharpmaker rod--nice scratch on the otherwise prisrine (and quite stunning) stonewash.

Dropped my Small Inkosi onto asphalt, ding in Ti Scale. Dropped my 0460 onto asphalt, ding in CF.

Yeah, I suck. Don't lend me your knives. I've also come to the realizarion that some way, some how, I'm eventually going to screw up even my safe queens. So I gave up on safe queens. It was either that or give up on knives completely.

Sad to hear about the OP's knife: I'm surprised he did not describe the damage or the knife.

I'm also always surprised that people with collections probably far larger than mine (which is to say more than about 10 knives) always claim they use every single one of them... As if it was absolutely vital to use every single knife in a 20 knife collection...

It seems to me that spreading the wear and tear of cosmetic damage to the maximum number of knives in your collection is rather pointless: You only need to own about 3 knives if you really want to do that...

As to worn/scratched knives looking better than pristine knives, I can understand that. What I don't understand is people who need to state they exclude the possibility of having it both ways, as if having a single pristine/unused knife in their entire collection would reveal wastefulness or excess...

What is this "realizarion" you mentioned, some kind of knife dropping condition?

My 2 cents...I don't have a safe, I don't have safe queens...I will say that I do have some pricier knives that I am more reserved about damaging but I will say this...When you take out one of your pricey knives that you have saved for and really care about, put it through a beating and watch it shine and excel, it really is an awesome experience, and you feel better about owning a premium knife than you ever will if you just keep it in a safe and occasionally fondle it on the couch.

I'm confused. If it was a safe queen, why were you carrying it?

Sorry for your accident. Were you ok?

Not a safe queen ( I don't have any of those), but I dropped my XM 24 Bowie on a tile floor after less than a week of ownership. This was a grail knife I had been coveting for years (woohoo for the prices going down!)

My butt puckered so hard I almost injured myself.

Broke a nice chunk off the tip. Few minutes with some stones and all was well. Now it has a mini-swedge and a more robust point.

I'll try to post some picks when I get home.

That sucks. I keep my collection small, and they're all users, but I totally understand wanting to keep some pristine. Being forced to abandon that by the gods of circumstance would make me reaaaaaaal unhappy.

That said, at least there is a silver lining in that it can go into your rotation and be happily used. It'd be a lot worse if you collected commemorative plates instead. ;)

I did a similar thing with a 0560 when that was the most expensive knife I had ever purchased. Dented the tip pretty good. It allowed me to not baby the knife.

Op, it happens. Now use that thing!

Quit with the secrecy and post some pics OP! worthless and less fun without pics.

OK, didn't we tell you not to walk with an open blade ...

Sorry to hear - I feel your pain.
Curious which knife it is.
I hope you enjoy using it now- I know I do (lg-Sebenza wood inlay).

Ouch! I feel your pain, too.
I dropped my first custom on the day I got it, while I was playing with it drunk. Luckily, it fell on a wood floor in the closed position. There was no visible damage. But it chilled my spine.

I just bought a mini griptilian last week and while I was re-adjusting the pivot screw (BM cranks them down for us northerners) and while flicking it open, it decided to launch out of my hand and unceremoniously deposited itself into my knee on the way down. At least my knee slowed its drop onto the floor.

Ah heck guys, get them medium priced EDC 's like me and don't worry. Be happy.
But, like I said earlier, I'll give all your dinged knives a good home. I'll love them and carry them and tell them how pretty they are. They won't even know They're ugly Betty's. :)

I know you guys want to see pics. This knife was a partial gift. While the gifter is not a bladeforums member, I would rather him not run into them on a google search (I run into my own knife pics quite often this way.) There are some unique parts of the knife he would recognize. This is most of the reason for my excessive sulking. The blade tip is destroyed, the edge took a good beating, scratches on the blade, pivot is gnarred, scratches on show side, spine, and butt of the handle. Not pretty.

Ouch!

I got a safe queen once, never again. so high maintenance, always telling you what to do, always gotta focus on her, blah blah

Well, I dropped mine, and I got that butt puckering feeling when I picked it up and the tip was chipped off. I learned then that safe queens were useless.

Everything I get is for use first, aesthetics second. I got some sterling hardware recently, first thing I did was add a patina with sulfur to avoid having to polish it every damn day for fingerprints.

Safe queens, unless you have the resources, are a waste of time. We all gotta learn the fun way though.

Yes I'm fine. We just bought a new house and I was carrying a few of my knives individually from the truck. This one I had out and was admiring on the drive over.

It sounds more like you drop kicked it across the street. You can do some serious damage rather easily it seems (safe queen to absolute beater in 20 seconds); stay away from my knives. ;)
