When you hand someone your knife.......

This thread just made my day with laughs. Recalling how I relate to it puts a smile on my face. Nowadays I carry a CS Spartan and on the rare occasion that someone asks to use it and doesnt want me to cut whatever it is for them, I wave that thing out and I swear they look at me like im going to kill them. They ALWAYS just let me do the job for them. I suppose the key to doing this though is to be very friendly so they know I have good intentions. funny sheeple

Happens all the time. I have taken to telling them, don't run your thumb on the blade.

I handed one of mine to a 16 year old kid today. He was cautious. Tested the edge appropriately, and ever so gingerly.

He knows how sharp my knives are. He is a long time boy scout in our troupe.

I usually do this with factory sharpened knives. I just do it on instinct. I honestly like the feeling. Never been cut that way either but I also never run my thumb up and down the blade like some people do.

I'm pretty sure I've seen people running their fingers down a blade in a few movies.
Maybe that's why everyone does it, but who knows...

I've yet to see anyone get cut by my knives when they look at them. Most seem to have common sense XD.

I don't hand my knives to anyone unless I know they're smart enough to NOT do something like that. Anyone whose intelligence I question wants to borrow my knife...I ask them what needs cutting, and then do it myself(assuming it's something reasonable and not something like "I need to pry open this drawer").

I too am in the group that says if I don't know that the person will use and handle the knife responsibly and appropriately, then I won't give it to them.

But this reminds me of when I hand a really powerful flashlight to someone to use and I warn them very seriously NOT to shine it in their eyes because it's really bright. And wouldn't you know it, the first thing that some people will do is look right into the lense and press the button. Then they wind up partially blind for an hour. It's like a Darwin test, it immediately identifies the morons among us and warns us to beware of them.

I shudder at the thought of such people handling firearms.

I handed one of my knives to a friend and he went to see if its shaving sharp just like he had seen me do once. (he has little to no knife experience) it made me cringe, he only got a small cut for his stupidity

Same here. Saves a lot of trouble.

That is exactly the reason that that makes a lot of people uncomfortable around knives. You admittedly enjoy drawing attention to yourself by waving out a novelty sized knife. I will say this, your behavior is stated accurately sure does not do the hobby any favors. I also find the term "sheeple" to be an outright stupid cliche.

I'll see your "cliche" and raise you an "offensive".

If you feel the need to refer to a group as 'sheeple', what do you suppose they refer to you as (behind your back).

Lol and we call terrorists terrorists when they call themselves heroes. Who cares what you call them, its all relative to perspective.

Read some Nietzsche and then maybe the term won't seem so much of a cliche.

For the most part I do the cutting for them myself, I have seen too much bloodshed. Only to those I know well enough to use a knife properly do hand it to them.

He didnt say he whips it out just to get reactions. He said on rare occasions when asked to use it, people react in a way some might find a bit humorous because of their irrational fears / lack of knowledge on the subject. Especially when said object is legal.

I don't see the harm in saying the word sheeple either... You have a right to your opinion, but really... does it bother you that much? We can just call them ignorant, but people take offense to that too. Maybe because its true...

He didn't state his intentions, you are right about that. He did however state the outcome...and intentions don't matter if the actions insight fear.

You may not see the harm in labeling another person, but it is a dangerous and ignorant practice. Truth may be that the person you label as 'ignorant' or 'sheeple' might well know a lot more than you, but they choose not to act as boldly as some.

I understand your point. Sometimes though, the people we call ignorant... are ignorant. Its a word, with a definition. Words are used to describe things. I just don't feel it was that big of a deal and still don't, nor would i have any reservations about using the word in the future.

I don't hand my knives to people. A knife is a tool and you have to learn how to use it properly. Someone who doesn't own a sharp knife doesn't think about knife enthusiasts and how sharp a knife can get. Explain it to people. Teach those that will listen and show those that won't. Once people get familiar with it they will know better. Sounds dumb but how many people really know what sharp is or how to sharpen?

my opinel gets people like this all the time, they see a simple, old looking strange knife with a stained up blade and they just have to slice themselves open. my scary "tactical" looking knives people are slightly less inclined to thumb the edge.

I pretty much ALWAYS thumb the edge of the knife, it's how I was raised to test sharpness. never cut myself because I don't go with the edge, I go perpendicular to it....

I love it when they tell me it TOO sharp. Then ask what I need a knife that sharp for. Im like wtf? Give me my knife back. Iv lost all patience with stupid people.

Because you know what you are looking for. You want to see how much "grab" it has on you thumb print.

People see, then they imitate. But why someone would go in a SLICING motion is beyond me...

I just say, "Dull is dangerous" with a smile and take my knife back.
