When you hand someone your knife.......

See, this right here is exactly why I don't hand people my knives. If they don't have one of their own, they probably aren't experienced enough to use one. I loaned out a knife exactly *once*, it was a Delica. A very, very sharp Delica. Guess that they did.

So I no longer let people handle my knives unless they've proven that they aren't stupid/insane/clumsy enough to injure themselves.

I let a co worker fondle one of my BMs because he was into knives. Me:"don't cut yourself, it's sharp." Co-worker: "don't worry little lady, I got this." Hands knife back after a good fondling. Notices finger is dripping blood.....Co-worker: "how did that happen?!"
Me: "forehead smack"
Sigh....well, that's what you get for calling me little lady. Instant karma. Boom.

Every since I saw this video from Murray Carter, I've always used this test to examine an unknown knife.

Skip to about :50 to skip the intro.

This also happens to me, I think it mainly happens with a mirrored edge, people just want to touch shiny things, and it doesn't feel that sharp until it has sliced deeply into some finger meat. A 200 grit edge, they will feel that bite in and say dam that's sharp before it draws blood.

I'll see your "cliche" and raise you an "offensive".

If you feel the need to refer to a group as 'sheeple', what do you suppose they refer to you as (behind your back).

They must call him the WOLF...

I don't hand my knife to people. In the rare occasion that I do, it will be someone experienced with sharps...and they know what to expect from me...

exactly!!

this is why always carry 2, one for me & one for the masses. the one for the masses isn't as sharp as my personal carry

I learned from stupid people experience

ive had friends do this on my hunting knife and fillet their fingers wide open, i like my hair shaving, or nail carving test.... sadly its a tad safer

I tend to do the draw the fingers across the blade thing.

If I have to hand a knife to someone else I always do it closed and let them open it. Far less intimidating.

I usually open it because non knifers don't know how to do it safely. Even more so with an assisted knife like my Blur. I tell them "don't even try to close it. Just set it down."

I have found that when I hand them a large BandAid before I hand them the knife, they are less inclined to do something stupid. It also helps that I don't hand them a knife unless they know me well enough to be certain that thing is sharp enough to shave with.

One of my buddies asked for a knife from another one of my friends without saying what for. He recieves a knife and promptly saws a red bull can in half to make an ash tray!...
The knife was a gerber, but still, glad it wasnt mine!
I will remember to alwas ask the intended use of a knife if ever asked to lend one.

Why do they always press their thumb to the blade? I warn people before they do it and still--they always do it and get cut.

Lol its natural I guess. I know I do it but ive never had my own blade nor have I had anyone else hand me a blade that could cut like that..though its not like I JAM my thumb down on it lol...just cant sharpen(nor can anyone else i know apparently) a knife THAT sharp though I know it can be done.

Yeah and 1000% a guy did this with my Gerber Parabellum and a can of soup....I didnt notice what he was doing till he was 90% done and I was like WTF dude he said..I figured you knife was the only one at camp that could open it...then I said..if you had ASKED I could have walked up to the cabin and brought you a CAN OPENER! dulled it up a bit and scratched the blade...Bad part is he really didnt get it and still doesnt lol. But then again he has never had or carried anything but a $15 knife from Walmart either.

now when someone asks "anyone got a knife?" I always say..what for lol.

Well, this isn't really what this thread is about but reading all this reminded me of an incident where I looked like an utter dimwit. Walking through Bass Pro Shops with my wife I noticed a rainbow leek. I don't buy knives there since they tend to be way overpriced but I wanted to check it out. The handle on it was a bit slippery and when I pushed on the speedsafe mechanism the knife fell out of my hand. I tried to catch the knife and unfortunately succeeded. The blade nicked me ever so slightly in the webbing between my fingers. I didn't feel it and when I put the knife on the counter I noticed a pool of blood on then glass. I looked at my hand and it was covered in blood. The guy behind the counter was staring at me in a mixture of disbelief and horror. My wife decided this would be a good time to start making fun of me loudly. I thought that buying the knife would somehow restore some shred of dignity but the guy insisted on cleaning it first. Since I didn't want to hang around the site of my shame any longer, I pointed at a mini grip in the display case and said I'd take that instead. I really should have bought the leek, and I eventually did buy a rainbow leek. Oh well, I still carry that beat up old mini grip despite my hatred for the combo edge it has.

my dad does it with all the knives i finish, But for some reason dad hands are made with some kind of thick leather.

Most everyone I know was raised with knives, so I never need to hand anybody one unless its just to check mine out.
They know it will be sharp.

I do test edge sharpness with the fingers on my right hand. I lightly put my middle and index finger pads on the edge and pull away from the edge.
I started doing this as a meat cutter and have never cut myself this way. If someone isn't familiar with doing this I tell them not to do it just because they saw me do it.
