Where do you draw the line between "cost" and "use"

For example, would you pay $500 for a knife and then willingly go out and beat the snot out of it ?

Or is that $500 blade bought for adoration and financial appreciation ONLY?

Few of us would think twice about beating the hell out of a $300 blade (or is it a $200 blade?)

I'm just curious where most of you draw that line.

Thanks :D

I think if you want quality you are gonna pay a little extra......and when you get quality you will be able to beat the heck out of it....if you choose to spend less you will get what you paid for.........probably a broken piece of equipment that does not do what you want it to and it will be tossed aside and well basically ......FORGOTTEN...That is why I love my job!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe that Busse is never the "Forgotten"............

Been there, done that. $500 is not the most I have spent on a blade I have put to use by the way. Oh that begs we start another thread, what's the most expensive user you have? :D

Well I agree that you get what you pay for. I think what David means is even $500 is above and beyond what the average person would pay for a beater. Sure I beat Steel Hearts, Outlaws and my Battle Mistress. None of those were $500 though. I haven't taken my Nuke Heart out and smacked it around yet. I haven't taken my FSH recurve variant out and beat it either. I may or may not. It's not foremost on my mind because I have other pieces of Infi that fill that bill.
Had I only one, it would be used eventually. Regardless what it cost. I'd have to use it. Since I'm lucky enough to not just have a custom I can have my cheesecake and eat it to.

I guess the answer is yes. If I bought one Busse I would certainly use it. Be it a $300 model or something upwards of $700.

Having said all of that. Most of my friends think I'm nuts for spending $100 on a knife let alone $300. But I'm not afraid use my knife for tasks most would consider abuse. ;)

That is more common a response than any other I think, especially for those who don't appreciate the value of a top quality blade.

Well, I don't really know because I have never spent that kind of money on a knife yet. The most expensive knives I own are my Battle Rats and I pummel them on a regular basis. I hope to get a piece of Infi one day, and if I do I suppose I will do my best to beat it to death too.

That having been said, I have no complaints about the quality of my Swamp Rat knives. Since I do not own a Busse I cannot compare them fairly, but the Rats take everything I can throw at them and keep coming back for more.

I beat my...... SHSH :D

I paid $525.00 for it. The very first strike stings a little but every one after that feels great. They are top quality knives and you can tell with every swing.

I have a $500+ HOG FSH that I've beat up a lot. Hard as I may try, I can't even bruise it.. Plus, it just gets better looking with age and wear.

I told my brother and friends, who asked, how much I paid for my first busse. They looked at me like I was a moron, a big moron. The thing is, all of them go out and party down, drinking, all the time. I figure they spend about $500.00 each every 5-6 weeks on alcohol. I don't drink. Now if I buy a Busse every 5-6 weeks averaging between $3-500.00 and their spending that much in alcohol in the same amount of time then who's the big moron.

I won't buy a knife that I can't use (or resell). I used to say that about firearms also until I purchased a "1 of 500" Beretta limited edition set of pistols......I just can't bring myself to fire either of them. I am going to purchase a piece of infi eventually (when I can find one that I like that isn't snagged up by the HOGS before I get to the trough), and when I do, I will use it plenty hard. I really need Busse to come out with a 3"-4.5" bladed beast, and another of the really big, really thick whackers. I almost bought a HH when the company store had them, but, for some reason, they just didn't float my boat. Oh, the line, I don't look at price as much as what I get for what I spent, and I will use what ever I buy...most expensive knife I have currently.....Fallkniven A2 followed by the battle rat.

My upper limit had been $300, but then, I bought it to BE a user, not a looker.

Since then, my upper limit is now apparently $427 plus $15 shipping, as I got the HOSJTLE which feels too good NOT to use.

I understand quality. I understand it costs more (money-wise) and I'm willing to pay for that level of quality.

But, comes a time when a knife costs a LOT of money, just because it's rare, not because of the quality.

I really can't afford much. But, If I buy it, I'll use it. When I've mentioned the cost of most Busse blades to friends or family, they gasp in awe that anyone could pay that much. Oh freakin' well! We're just in the know. If I could afford a HOGSJTLE or a HOGFSHLE, I'd pay it gladly, and use the heck out of it. I just spent the weekend chopping wood with my HH and cleaning fish with my STRipper, and those are the most expensive knives I own, beside a couple Michael "Tinker" Pearce customs.

So far the most expensive blade that I've used is my AK-47. I never think about the cost when I'm swinging that thing. It's the same way when I do a break stand with my dually and start burning 4 tires down. I'm smiling way too much to worry about what I just spent at Goodyear.  :D

I will be using my HOGFBMLE when I get it- no hesitation!
So will I !! :D Except mine will probably be a standard FBM (with Magnum scales) and not the HO......

i used my 500 something dollar ak47 as a thrower. and i intend to use my custom slicer (wenever i should get it) as an edc. i cut down my 300$ nick into a choiless slicer and use it daily. also have carried my .220 lesj (old version) daily for 2 years now.

i replaced that with my hoglesjtac as my edc. i'll use it to hack and pry stuff just like its predecessor.

eventually i'll be getting a moab that i intend to use in roughly the same manner as i use my 18" ang khola.

i dont buy anything im not willing to use :D (of course, there are some blades i never get around to useing, but if it was called upon i wouldnt hesitate to)

I beat the crap out of my 600.00 AK sword & have pics to back it up :p

Plan on beating it some more at Blade :D So those that are going bring stuff to chop!

I use the crap out of my SH Variant and SHBM so I guess cost doesn't really matter. I do have an engraved KaBar that I haven't used yet. It was used as incentives for my guys when I was a PSG. It has my unit engraved along the blade. Wouldn't want to break this one.

My SHBM has scuffs up and down the blad from abuse and even a small nick (which one day I will remove) near the top after accidentally cutting a rock with it when I was clearing ground level brush. I used it every day for two months back in 2000 and it was put through hell in Kenya. Since then I have my E-BM which had the crap kicked out of it however even though I have used it extensively I still can't get the coating off.

One has to ask themselves when buying a high end knife, is it worth it and what will it be used for. When looking at all of my knives I always ask my self these questions because I rely on these tools.

I guess that the abuse should not be an after thought but a fore thought where you know that it will be abused but you know that it a great quality tool with great service and warrenty and you know that if you spend $400- $500 on a busse you are not wasting your money and you are getting quality!

I have seen knives out there from companies that will remain nameless with blades that are a couple of hundred dollers that I know I could never use because of the blade material. They are nice to look at but would not hold up under a stress condition. And then there are lower cost knives which will hold up really well.

We always seem to equate something of more value with I should not use it because of the cost. When in fact that is what these knives were designed for.

The ones I would never buy for example are the art knives that are $1000-$2000 and made of damascus with latice hollowed out ivory handles and would not be used for chopping because it was not designed for that, not that the blade wouldn't hold up but the hollowed, see through ivory carved handle would break. These are only meant to be looked at.

Now going back to our price range and Busse's. When I first heard of busse back in 1998-1999 he had a small brouchure with two SHBM's one was combat grade and the other was serial numbered. I got the combat grade not because of cost or material, both grades were made of the same steel, but because I equated serial number with collectability and that meant to me I should not use it. Combat grade meant beat the crap out of it, which is what happened :) .

Bottom line is that some people use their knives while others buy them to look at or collect. It all truly depends on the person, their budget and what they want the knife for. I need a real tool and I love my Busses, I also have other makers knives but for the most part my large knives are busses and all of my knives get used. I have them divided up to knives used only for Africa and knives only used in America and then I rotate through them so that wheneever I go to Africa I do not always bring the same "Africa" knife and when camping or hiking here I do the same.

In the end it is up to you and only you can make the call on which knife you want to use and which should remain virgin.

Sorry for the long post...... I am at work and don't really want to work so this is a better outlet......... Boss is coming :barf: ........ Must go :(.

INFI RULESSSSS
