My SHBM has scuffs up and down the blad from abuse and even a small nick (which one day I will remove) near the top after accidentally cutting a rock with it when I was clearing ground level brush. I used it every day for two months back in 2000 and it was put through hell in Kenya. Since then I have my E-BM which had the crap kicked out of it however even though I have used it extensively I still can't get the coating off.
One has to ask themselves when buying a high end knife, is it worth it and what will it be used for. When looking at all of my knives I always ask my self these questions because I rely on these tools.
I guess that the abuse should not be an after thought but a fore thought where you know that it will be abused but you know that it a great quality tool with great service and warrenty and you know that if you spend $400- $500 on a busse you are not wasting your money and you are getting quality!
I have seen knives out there from companies that will remain nameless with blades that are a couple of hundred dollers that I know I could never use because of the blade material. They are nice to look at but would not hold up under a stress condition. And then there are lower cost knives which will hold up really well.
We always seem to equate something of more value with I should not use it because of the cost. When in fact that is what these knives were designed for.
The ones I would never buy for example are the art knives that are $1000-$2000 and made of damascus with latice hollowed out ivory handles and would not be used for chopping because it was not designed for that, not that the blade wouldn't hold up but the hollowed, see through ivory carved handle would break. These are only meant to be looked at.
Now going back to our price range and Busse's. When I first heard of busse back in 1998-1999 he had a small brouchure with two SHBM's one was combat grade and the other was serial numbered. I got the combat grade not because of cost or material, both grades were made of the same steel, but because I equated serial number with collectability and that meant to me I should not use it. Combat grade meant beat the crap out of it, which is what happened

.
Bottom line is that some people use their knives while others buy them to look at or collect. It all truly depends on the person, their budget and what they want the knife for. I need a real tool and I love my Busses, I also have other makers knives but for the most part my large knives are busses and all of my knives get used. I have them divided up to knives used only for Africa and knives only used in America and then I rotate through them so that wheneever I go to Africa I do not always bring the same "Africa" knife and when camping or hiking here I do the same.
In the end it is up to you and only you can make the call on which knife you want to use and which should remain virgin.
Sorry for the long post...... I am at work and don't really want to work so this is a better outlet......... Boss is coming :barf: ........ Must go
