Where does your Ratweiler live?

Beautiful, the infamous #69! Love the blade on that one.

What type of tasks do you like them for?

Which grind do you find you like the best? I love the idea of that thin LE with the meaty saber.

Mostly used for wood prep...

Yep, BE, I bought that one off of ol Chiral. She's one of the 3/16 blades. I'm responsible for stripping her. I love satin and black canvas micarta.
Hard Knocks Hard Knocks Dave, Jonny did not thin the edge of this one. Just my Infiweiler. :)
And you are correctomundo, Jonny knows his edge geometry.
@91bravo
Here's the one Jonny worked his magic on with her Mashed Cat sheath.

THIS, is a knife that looks really nice with a fuller. I assume this is nuked, then, does it have any other magic under the hood? I know the recent busse (forsaken steel heart) I got in on milled the tang for a complete difference balance from the stock version. I went for the stock version and I'm pretty much hoping it's a busse level ratweiler, give or take a some added engineering. There will comparison photos and "chop offs."

I think there's still an infiweiler on the exchange. I'm waiting for the price to come down so it becomes reasonable to consider it over the steel heart I'm waiting on.

Looking forward to hearing about those chop offs.

That hammered steel? That’s the one that sparked this discussion. I want a weiler but don’t know which direction I wan to go. I’ve got user Infi, but zero 101. That’s why I’m curious what kind of tasks people like these blades for.

Chin scratcher.

There are several thicknesses of Ratweiler out now, don't know if I can keep them all straight. The Terror Monkey and LE are both thinner than the OP2W thin version. I think my LE is .150 or so, the thin version around .180, the INFI-weiler at .210 and the thick version coming in at a quarter-inch. Not sure what the originals were though. Also IIRC the OP2W thick version had a higher primary grind than the OP2W thin version. Sweet blades, all.

I'll have to look at my Ratweiler's this evening. I have all three (thick SR-101, thin SR-101, and INFI). Of the three, I like the looks and feel of the INFI the best. However, I think the thick SR-101 has the most use on it, maybe. I haven't noticed a difference in edge thickness between the three, but I also haven't compared them side-by-side. I need to do that.

I do know the thick SR-101 chops quite well, as does the INFI. The thin, I don't remember. It was the first I got, and I just can't remember how it did. I like all three, and all three are keepers.

Sorry.... I guess I'm not much help... :(

So SR101 either is or is close to 52100 with a superb heat. That said, it holds and edge really well, is tough "enough" but has no stain resistance. Somehow, I think 52100 patinas faster than 1095 and 1075 steels. I added a little vinegar to mine to cover up a little rust that formed after storing it damp after clearing some weeds around my woodcraft site. You can see the speckles from where the rust cleaned up here, where is more of a lighter gray still.

I actually prefer SR101 simply because I don't think infi is worth the extra cost, in most scenarios. Also, I like patina so the far better stain resistance of infi is a bit lost on me but I do think infi is tougher, overall. But, I've beaten the hell out of my RW and haven't been able to roll the edge or anything like that. I'm not trying to become a geologist or anything with it but I'm not afraid to pry pieces of wood apart or baton through a know using a tree stump as a baton.

I like the think the one thing the ratweiler does will is doing everything acceptably. It's not fantastic at anything but it seems like it would be my "one-blade" option, if I felt the hysteria to actually limit myself to one. I lied a little there, it is amazingly photogenic and there's only a few busse's I think look better, one I have on order (forsaken steel heart). The other is the forsaken mistress. I am biased though, because most don't come with patina so the weiler's stellar look was earned.

I find the RW better at camping/woods work than other stuff, especially with a focus on portability. You can carve pretty well using a knee lever, one of my favorite ways to shave off material with a bigger blade and pretty much a requirement for a woods knife now. I have larger than average legs so I pretty much need a 5" blade in order to use a knife like that but I get amazing controlled power for taking off layers of wood for rough carving tasks.

I could go on and on about how I've used this thing and what I like and don't like but it would be a really long read.

You know BE, I like a good patina just as well as the next guy. Maybe even more?

But I had to forego any of that for my Infiweiler. I even sacrificed the weight. I went from lighter to a tad bit heavier. I just love knowing the Infiweiler is atomic or nuclear.

I was surprised at how deep my LE bites. It won't run with the M9 as a pure chopper, but it's no slouch, and it's much slicier. Also, I love how the deep milling looks and feels on the slabs of the LE. I wish the scales on the others were milled this deep.

They just look like they know their business with a little patina on 'em! :D

Looked at mine side by side (by side) tonight. INFI is the thickest behind the edge (which is odd/unfortunate: I thought INFI being the toughest, it would be able to run thinner behind the edge. Although, that could be a personal variance in finishing?). The thick RW was next thickest, but definitely thinner than the INFI. My “thin” RW was thinnest behind the edge. However, as it turns out, it apparently has had the most use (is my oldest), and somewhere along the way, I had taken the stones to it and have knocked the shoulders off and thinned it out behind the edge bevel. It is quite slicy. And obviously has some miles on it.
Both of my SR-101 RW’s have the “plunge” line (?) starting at the same point up the width of the blade. The INFI’s starts a little lower. It looks like maybe to accommodate the fuller.
The INFI feels best in the hand, IMO. However, this thread has me of the mind to put the thick SR-101 back into rotation for a big.

All three fit the same Azwelke kydex sheath.

Thanks Rob, I’ve got about 30 views on that video already.

So, in having a bit of variety, would you say you prefer one build over the other?

To be honest it's a bit hard to decide on these two. I'm a sucker for thick blades, however the comfort of the handle on the thinner LE version is amazing. And I do like the sliceyness of the LE. But the Standard thick one has great edge geometry too and is super slicey. Aarrrggghhh the agony of choice :D
