Where is the line?

Yes, it is so.
When working horses and cattle, I found the value of having a knife I could access quickly... very quickly.
If you look at Dave's @Horsewright photos, you'll see a lot of fixed blade knives carried for exactly that reason.
Nowadays, my life doesn't demand that type of knife, but I still appreciate what they have to offer... but don't carry them much any more.

Yes i've seen the Dave's knives. I like them, stylish working tools. Traditional in my opinion.
That said, i was kidding, not the worst joke i've made maybe.

Dan.

In my opinion if you could take a time machine to the 1960’s, show somebody your knife and them not think it seemed out of place or strange, then it would pass the test as traditional
Since I turned 20 in 1970 and was a pocket knife guy since 11 or 12 years old this test works for me, and has since I started moderating this sub forum 11 years ago. That sentiment is also reflected in the guidelines posted/stickied on the first page.
Yes, things have changed, and it seems they change daily, but it still works for me.

My God, you're old. I'm only just approaching 70. Get with it, man! 🤣

I think my grandpa gave me my first folders, (Imperial, Utica, etc.), in the late 50's. Only wish I still had them and hadn't lost 'em.

Eleven years...time flies. Gus and I made a fine choice when we felt it was time to pass the baton.

I understood you were joking... Just trying my best to cover my tracks. 🤣

I knew you had understood i was kidding and i knew you were trying, i have to say, awkwardly, your tracks.
I'm grateful you don't use the words "Modern traditionals". It would bother me.
Like:
"Dark white" , "straight curve" , "dry rain" or "friendly French".

In my defense I hit 72 just 2 weeks ago!
Oh great... now we're bringing batoning into this?
Elliott passed the baton to Frank and me, but sometimes I question where it ended up. ;)

For my collection, a knife is a knife. I really don't care at all about categories like Modern or Traditional and have many of both.

For posting on this forum, the distinction matters and is important. Like many, I once posted a picture of something I thought was Traditional, but was considered Modern. The post was moved off to the General subforum. No big deal to me - I learned a little more clearly where the line was.

No one needs acrimony (or alimony). The important thing is to respect the people here and that involves learning and following the rules, and showing grace to those trying to figure them out.
