Where to Buy Metal ? 1084 / 5160 / 1080+ ???? Help ! (I'm in Canada)

Aldo lists 1/8" as .140

it gives you .015 to flatten

I thought he was referring to knifemaker.ca which lists 1/8" as 1/8" , the OP doesn't want to discuss the supplier but goes ahead and bashes their product and customer service. I can only speak to my own experiences which were all positive .

Aldo is his source, should be the same.

That's what I was wondering about the difference if it's the same source. Or perhaps over a large sheet of metal there are area's slightly thicker or thinner then the stated thickness. Would have to know the manufacturers specs for that .

Gentlemen,

Most of the steels we carry, short of precision ground, are over sized no less then .015 to allow for decarb. In the case of some Stainless Steels they can be as much as .05 over sized. We tend to use the decimal system here at the shop rather than fractions due to its accuracy. We all carry Mics. or Calibers in our pockets and are constantly using them. Most of our Carbon Steel bars will have a variance of only a few thousandths if any over a 4 foot piece. The company that rolls it is very accurate.

A lot of Suppliers just stick to the fractions. They also have to worry about 10,000 other items they stock, where as we have to worry about the same amount of steel sizes. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Aldo,
Your Friendly Neighborhood Steel Baron

unless you're making folders, and buying PG...there's really no need to worry about getting exact dimensions .Like aldo said, you have to allow for decarb anyway.

Don't know how far from me you are but I have about 8' of Aldos 1/8" 1084, the same of .07 15n20 and 4' of 5/32 52100 all in 2". I have a bunch of 3' bars of O1 in widths from 1-4" that I got locally but at 40$ for a 3' length of 2" it's rather expensive. If you want some, let me know and Im sure we can work something out.

@Duffy... mate we know you're in love with that supplier, we get it. More time being constructive, less time trying to get your voice heard as a hater - thanks.
RE: Aldo-- he is the place to go !! Great guys. (to your credit, you do seem to make a pretty little drop knife though)

As for who supplies who, and how can it be thinner etc.... Seems I got stuck with Old Ends for my order, before Aldo's quality material was supplied. "Hope that helps you understand Duffy."

As I said, I received .118 (with skin on) when my lowest tolerance needed was .125 -- as if that wouldn't upset you. And that store was mentioned by name once to avoid getting that place recommended. Kinda thought this was obvious....

Nice to see there are trolls even in a great forum like bladeforums, who have nothing more interesting to do than hound on someone, instead of being constructive.

@TattooedFreak, I'm actually 5 minutes away, and around the corner. Didn't know there were makers in this area. It's been a decade since I've built, so outta touch with the current community, back when I was fulltime corss-border, it was just me here and one jeweler. Feel free to message/email me and we'll chat.

Kindest -- and thanks that most of the forum has been very constructive and welcoming.
Jim

Sorry I'm new to knife making and haven't been a full-time maker and in the "game" for decades making knives and swords with leaf springs and fish oil.

Being passive aggressive with your answers doesn't help others trying to understand the problem and your expectations of what you want to be able to provide a helpful answer. I could've listed 10 suppliers of the steel you want but without knowing the exact tolerances you expect it wouldn't be helpful as they may provide something similar to what you have a problem with .

There is a sub-forum here FEEDBACK: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly! where people can share their experiences good or bad with dealers and suppliers . If a supplier of steel is knowingly shorting customers isn't that good information to share with others?
Maybe I should use my digital calipers more as I might be getting thinner stock also and not noticing it.

Duffy- thanks. Actually mate, I started my post with my needed tolerances...seriously.
And my post was a simple, please list places to find 1084 steels other than where I had already been.
Dont care if I need to have it shipped fro the other side of the world, just wanted metal.
That was answered with the suggestion to call Aldo.

And yeah, for some purposes, and depending on your making style, that thickness difference can really make a difference, especially when you're not dealing with top-ground (finished) stock, and that .118 undersize can quickly diminish further. Not much room for waggle in the grinding, you know?

Anyway. Didn't see the feedback forum, but really was not my intention to even go there, as I was only mentioning my experience as part of a rant (grin) in my request for a new supplier. In the end, it's just a knife and I gave the thread discord too much consideration anyway.

Do appreciate the latest posting -- and I was serious about liking your little drop knives.

Later
jim

ps- yeah, what I learned after a long while making ? I've grown too old to care about hand sanding a knife 10 hours in order to see myself in the surface (there's mirros for that).
