Basically the title says it all. I am on exchange in Beppu (oita prefecture), Japan on the southern island and got approved by my campus to carry one. I have no idea where to buy one.

One of my goals here is to find one along with knife steel to bring back. Anyone have an idea???

Good luck!

Check out some real kiridashis while you are in the store. They, too, were originally woodworkers tools.

I see! I will see what I can do. I live on campus and I classified a higonokami as a "cooking tool" lol no one here knows what it is

I picked one up and a kick ass kiridashi as well. I got to say, for 500 yen (5 bucks) It is well worth it for this knife! I saw the same model on the website in america for 30 not including shipping. Thanks for the help people. Now to figure out what water stone I want from the store (They literally have a whet/water stone section!!!!)

I see. Do you know the japanese name for a hardware store??? (I know little to no japanese, no clue how I ended up here)

I will post them in a few hours. I have to go register for my green card here but after that I will. LITERALLY BOUGHT THE HIGONOKAMI WITH A COIN! and the kiridashi is a beast.

I can't find in america but I have found a grouping of them with around 20 types of waterstones and wet stones (SOME WERE EVEN NATURAL JUST FLATTENED OUT!!!) 500 yen man. Can't knock it, I plan to pick up about 10 for gifts for ppl in the US and for me to EDC in america. An amazing steel in a friction folder that is good. (Won't shake loose!)

Nice knives, man! I've seen these knives for sale on the popular auction site. Has that changed?
