I think the french hawk is a for sure on the short list of what I'm buying first. The only problem is I can't find where to buy them?

Well , when all is said and done , If I could only have one tomahawk , It would be a Camp Tomahawk from Fort Turner , www.fortturner.com , Chop, split kindling, pound a tent stake and still have a Great thrower , And thats the way it is.

Thank's for all the Great picture's Billy, That New Fort Turner Iroquois Is Looking Good ! I like your Throwing Target setup, You need to Paint some Bull's Eye Ring's on them Log's, Have Fun Toma-Hawken !

What, if then, is the advantage or drawbacks of just the hawk blade, blade + spike, blade + poundy thing? I kind of thought that about the spike. Why would someone turn over a perfectly good blade to go for a small pokey thing?

I really really like those Fort Turner tomahawks. Thanks for the link.

Now I just have to decide between the Iroquois and the Buck. Does anyone have either or any, and if so, what is the verdict?

I've been thinking of the spike more for utilitarian reasons over it's obvious weapon use. The two things I can see it really being helpful is digging roots and tubers out of hard packed clay. Only useful if you know what plants are edible. Also, I can see it being really handy at prying fatwood off of stumps. Not good if you don't have many pine stumps in your area. So, I can see it's use and to be honest in a survival situation, I would be using the spike more than a hammer pole. A rock or heavy branch can sub as a hammer. I don't have a hawk yet so haven't tried these methods so YMMV.

for your guys with the cold steel hawks, do they use the standard tear drop handles? or do they have their own handle shape? i like the look of the curly maple handles..
bryan

Rather than 'tear drop'... it's more like 'egg shaped'...

I would advise the Cold Steel Frontier Hawk for a 1st hawk... it's a great thrower!!!

If you are looking for more of a general purpose hawk, get the Cold Steel Trail Hawk instead...

Get something more $$$ after you have that/those awhile first...

And have fun, experiment, get into 'modding', etc...

I had a spike hawk from haysknivesmontana.com and I loved it. O1 tool steel, 16" handle of some pretty indestructible material (can't remember name) came absolutely RAZOR sharp. Only thing is with O1 you gotta keep her well-lubed. Worth a look. Best Regards,

Bug , I'am a big Tac fan, like the spike! I have a Sog w/a custom handle, will post a pic some time soon.

Hello Bugbear;

Although I'm a brand new member here, I'm not brand new myself. Been around for 63 years now and would like to share with you what I like in a "Hawk."

For many years I went to different shooting matches around the Canada and the US and came to like the Tomahawks from many makers, and especially the one's from the Hawken Shop in St. Louis, Missouri.

Here's a couple fo photos of two of mine. The one with the bowl removed is what I've used, and won many competitons with.

I also do not wish to "step on any toes" here, so if I'm out of line suggesting this, please let me know.

I hope that helps a little Bugbear and you can easily look them up on the Web.
ps
You can also get these with a "Spike" instead of a pipe bowl as well.

Hello:

I am looking to get my first tomahawk, and I'm not sure where to start.

I assume since there is a great deal of cold steel useage it should be a good starting point. I like the looks of rifleman hawk, but I think I'd rather have a spike on the other side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Matchlock, I was looking through the Hawk's at the Hawken Shop and I Really Like there Design, I've alway's bought Hammer Forged Hawk's and I noticed these are Cast Hawk's, I still might give one a try though, I alway's hear Folk's Cutting Down the Cast Hawk's as an Inferior/Low Grade Hawk but I've seen some Cast Hawk's and Axe's that have been around for Many Year's, There's also a Cast Made FireMan's Axe that Is Indestuctible, So I know that some Casting's/Cast Hawk's are a Good Product, What's your opinion on a Cast Hawk or Axe versus a Hammer Forded one ? Here's a Link to The Hawken Shop's Hawk Section, http://www.thehawkenshop.com/tomahawks.asp

This one "Like The One You Have Is Nice" ! I'm gonna have to add this one to my Collection, I like the Interchangeable Bowl & Spike,
