All this talk of slicing apples got me wondering what apples everyone likes. My favorite is the Gala, then Red Delicious is close second. Pink Lady is another good one.

So which is your favorite?

In order of preference mine are Gala, Pink Lady, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. The GS are great for putting a patina on the blade (obligatory knife content! :D), but they're too tart for me to eat on an everyday basis. My wife on the other had can't get enough of them.

You have excellent taste there Wildcat!

Gala, then Red Delicious. I concur, wholeheartedly.

Both excellent for patina-izing. And remember what your Momma said...eat the peel, all the vitamins are in there!

Cortland, but you don't see them out this way (west coast) much.
MacIntosh.
Grannies, but mainly because they're always there. Good for pies, too.
We've got something out this way, it may be Gala, that's pretty good.
Recently tried a Gravenstein (sp?). That was pretty good.

yep, when we eat the apples, that is all i get. the kids won't eat the peels. so when i peel it, i leave a little extra meat on so dad gets a little apple.

They tell me "Cut the crust off dad"

MacIntosh
Fugi
I don't like Red and Delicious for some reason, too pulpy very high calories too... for an apple

Braeburn! Knew I was forgetting one there. Thanks Kerry! Braeburn would go on my list right next to Pink Lady, they're tied.

Got hooked on Granny Smith many years ago!. But I must confess to eating up lots of Macintosh's in the past. Never heard of Braeburn. I wouldn't mind giving that one a try since Kerry Hampton and freekboi have recommended it. I'll look for this Braeburn brand next time I go to the market. Good thread fellows..

Oh and by the way, y'all are making me HUNGRY..:D

Gala is a good apple from the shops but for things you get from local orchards or in the garden Cox's Orange Pippin is a wonderful apple, Bramley for tarts and jam, Worcester Pearmain as an eater is a small red sweet apple but doesn't keep well. Here in Scandinavia, Antonovka is worth eating. Wild or Crab apples are not to be despised, they make GOOD wine or cider and can be a tasty preserve or pie maker. Don't try them as dessert or the acid will have your teeth off and your stomach upset:barf:

How about PEARS? They are excellent but more fragile than apples and don't travel well. Could be a patina candidate too....Doyenne du Comice or William are very fine, Conference can be OK at times too.

Mutsu ! Golden Delicious, for eating apples.
But for patina on your blades,Vadallia onions,Strawberries

Jonagold, Braeburn, Gala and Golden Delicious for me.

Can you imagine this post ever making it in the Tacticool/Mall Ninja area?!?!?
I guess this post can officially be labeled "folksy".:D

My favorite up to a couple of years ago were the Braeburn. In the last two years the stores have been stocking a variety call Honey Crisp. They only seem to have them for about two-three months in the fall. Great snap when bitten! Steven

Fuji, Gala, Braeburn and granny smith..........used to love red delicious but they aren't the same apple as was grown 20 or 30 years ago.

Well, their equivalent might be along the lines of "Which body parts do you like to cut up with your knife?" :barf:
