Which apples to you prefer?

Speaking of folksy, how did this thread not get named:

How Do You Like Them Apples!?!  :D

Stayman Winesap, though strangely missing past few years and the ones coming in now don't rate at all, at least not in NJ....mealy. So now it's Fuji...consistant for a few years now. Crisp, super sugar, tart. But if you ever get you hands on a good solid big Winesap, your in for a treat.

BTW, Costco in NJ always has a great run of Fuji in a Clam pack, have been better than most produce markets and big and consistance. Thier specs are on.

upstate ny apples are hand down the best-
cant stand anything else-and washington st apples are as tasteless as they come

I'll have to second this statement! We got great apples here in Upstate NY!

I'm finding that to be the case, too. A couple of good ones, but I miss the apples of New England, where I was born.

Just the apples, mind you. ;)

From the supermarket ... FUJI!

Picked from an orchard and ripened on the tree ... most of 'em are better than anything shipped to a a store.

To me, the texture is as important as the sweetness. A mealy or mushy apple is revolting to me.

If I had to pick one variety as doctor-repellent, it would have to be Braeburn. Royal galas are good too, but Braeburns seem to have a more spicy, complex flavor. New Zealand specimens are usually better than Chilean, which have a tendency to be grainy and soft.

Liked my Mac's and Cortland's when I was growing up in the Mohawk Valley....now it's Fuji's and Braeburn's.......Gravenstein's for apple sauce, and an old variety, perhaps my favorite, King's...but they can sure be hard to find these days !

Whoa!! call the apple commission for this hot info. I like Breaburn and Pink Lady, but my favorite is Dutch Apple Pie.

Pink Lady is my favorite. Any apple just pulled from the tree will beat a grocery store apple that has been in storage for a year.

plus the fresh ones don't have the wax coating. I wish they would stop doing that.

As long as we're talking "grocery store" vs. "fresh", I thought I'd share this:

The difference between a "store" potato and a "fresh" potato is the difference between "good" and "bad".

The difference between a "store" tomato and a "fresh" tomato is the difference between "good" and "evil".

Commercial growers are only concerned with the shipability of their goods, not their quality.

I like apples baked into a pie, still warm from the oven, topped with ice cream.
Not sure what kind of patina you would get from slicing an apple pie though.

Granny Smiths as a snack and Jacques Lebel if i want to make some delicious old worldly apple sauce.
