Which axe for felling dead trees?

Yeah, I got it SP, only a real professional axeman could tell the difference, and if I can’t tell the difference, I just haven’t cut enough wood to have the credentials.

Could all the real professional axemen please raise their hands?
The number of real professional axemen are few and far between these days. You won't find them working in the woods as loggers for sure. Forest Service wilderness trail crews are the closest thing to pro axemen but they are working under stupid federal rules.

I sometimes ask questions I know the answers to ;)

Forrest Servcie is allowed to use chainsaws for "administrative purposes" in wilderness areas.

They just don't want any rando's wandering in to drop trees for fun.

A few years ago when I was still working for the Forest Service we had a hiker in a Washington Wilderness area accidental shoot his fellow hiker in the leg with a .22 mag. pistol. We sent in a helicopter to medivac him out and caught all kinds of hell for it. Purest said no helicopter should ever land for any reason in a wilderness area. We should have packed him out on a stretcher etc. etc.

Why didn't they long line him?

not my call. I really wasn't in on it until they had already lifted him out. But I wasn't looking forward to carrying anyone on a litter for miles.
Well if you've been shot getting carried out is a bit of a problem even if it doesn't seem serious at the start if the guy goes into shock or starts bleeding out plan B is likely to be too late.

If you long line you don't need to clear space to land, you can be way above the terrain and it and out pretty quick. Was this years and years ago? Maybe before this method was common?

Kinda sounds like this wasn't the first thing that manager decided to complain about.

Honest answer, yes it was years and years ago. Saying how many would kind of make me look old as the hills. :)
