Which Benchmade should I buy?

Hey everyone, haven't really posted much on this forum just been reading the different threads. I have had my eyes on the Benchmade Griptilian for a while now. I want the regular straight edge with no serrations, the only thing I am unsure of is if I want the silver looking plain blade with no coating on it or if I want the black coated blade. What exactly are the advantages of the black coated blade if there are any? Also how easy does it scratch and get messed up? Thanks

Some think black looks better. Depending on coating it can prevent scratches but scratches happen to any knife used and look worse with a coating. Light user black coated is fine as it won't get scratched much light use. Heavy use and black is gonna scratch a lot and to me doesn't look good

Blade coatings are there to protect the steel from corrosion and minor damage. For some steels, it helps. For others, not so much.

It's also for marketing, giving a 'tacticool' look.

With use, coatings will eventually scratch, dull and wear away. How fast depends on the type of coating and the usage.

Coatings tend to inhibit 'slice-ability' due to drag. Again, it depends on the coating and usage if this is a factor.

The black in my opinion looks better but I can see how it would scratch and wear off with use

I personally own a full size Benchmade Griptilian with a black tanto blade and serrations and I love the knife ^.^ I would say you can't really go wrong with any type of Griptilian.

That looks amazing, is it a custom or what model is that?

From Knifecenter: Benchmade 556-141 Gold Class Mini-Griptilian 2.91" M4 DLC Blade, Titanium Handles with Blue Twill G10 Inlays

Discontinued as well unfortunately but a heck of a nice looking knife.

I like the black blade mini grip/full sized grip for my collection and just to look at. For an EDC I'd go with the normal un-coated blade, since you won't see the same wear as the black blade and it'll provide less friction for slicing, plus it's a cheaper knife to get beat up. If you're a knife collector, you'll more than likely end up buying more than one griptilian anyway.

With the griptilian you may have a few more decisions beyond plain edge and black or satin. You get to choose blade shape, thumb hole vs. thumb stud, flat vs. hollow grind, handle color/material etc.:

Can't go wrong with a griptilian, but another one to throw out there is the Benchmade HK 14716, mini axis.
It comes standard with G10 scales and a black coated D2 blade and they can be had for less than a griptilian, usually around $95. The coating on the HK seems to be more scratch resistant than that on the grip, but maybe I haven't used it enough yet.

Mine is the mini version, but they have the full size too.
