Which blade to serve as a backup blade?

I carry an ESEE Izula almost every day. It is comfortable in my front pocket, and easy to access, even in my dress pants. I drag my Maxpedition "man bag" around everywhere, with 2 more fixed blades and my old cub scout pocket knife inside. Weird? Probably not to you guys, but my coworkers think I am nuts.

I have several knives with me when afield. If I were to lose one, or break one, I might have three, maybe 4 others. That does not include my having a ax and folding saw, in addition to knives.

At the shop today, I have a Leatherman, an old Benchmade folder, and a new little pocket fixed blade by TobinSmith.

I usually keep a spare mora in addition in my bag and a sak in my pocket in addition to whatever primary knife I;m carrying.

I'm with Riley. In additon to my belt knife I like to keep a mora in my bag as a "back up"/"loaner" blade and either a SAK or a Leatherman on my depending on the activity.

ESEE Izula and whichever folding knife I have on me. Generally either my umnumzaan or my military.

Another vote for the IZULA - it is so extremely lightweight and the shape and ergonomics are a 100% score in my opinion (edit: in relation to its size and weight that is). I´ve successfully batoned alot with it and I can say it´s very sturdy as well.

I also often carry a SAK Trailmaster with custom grooved carbon micarta scales:cool::thumbup: I also love that one for its very well working saw.

Best regards,

l.

Alright, so I want input from you guys on what serves as a functional backup knife for your main blade? I.E. you lose/break your primary knife, or your main blade is too large to serve for smaller tasks. What do you feel makes a good secondary/backup blade? A Sak? Your favorite Spyderco/Benchmade? Your largest beefiest overbuilt folder? A Neck knife? None at all?

Well I guess not living in a wilderness area and having different EDC laws my main blade choice is a bit backward to you guys. :o I always have a Wenger EVO 17 on me. If I want to back this up with something else, then depending on what I'm doing it's my RC-3 and a CRKT Big Eddy filleting knife.

With those Werewolves around on those Moors I'd want something bigger !:D

I have been enjoying this size knife for a while now. Very handy yet not too large :)

:D

I saw that movie when I was about 8 and it scared the crap out of me for years!

Then when I was 15 me and two friends did the Cleveland Way. We were still on the North Yorkshire Moors section and it was getting dark and we heard a dog howl! We started talking about the film, after about 15 minutes we were jogging along with our great big packs and hands on our knife handles, we were crapping it! We made those last few miles to the camp site in record time! We even stopped off at a pub to get a shandy and said how it reminded us of the "Slaughtered Lamb" (the talk went quiet when we went in!), we got spooked and made a pact not to talk about that film ever again!

I carry an izula in my pocket everywhere i go. Ordered a BRKT Bravo1 last week that will go on my pack or belt.

A Izula or a One-Hand Trekker or Farmer SAK would be a good backup.

Some good choices already; I'd lean towards something like a Victorinox Trekker.
Some very useful tools as well as a surprisingly decent blade.

I have one of those on order with that plan in mind.
I'm intended to carry my RC3 in the woods with the trekker as backup.

lol though I'm not sure I'll be able to bring myself to leave the Izula behind.

How many people simply carry a duplicate of their main bushcraft blade?

I ask because when I used to paintball; I talked to someone who played competitively and his back-up marker (paintball gun) was the same as his main. Same marker, same air system, same loader, same barrel, same operating pressure, same everything. The idea being that if he ever had to use his back-up he wouldn't ever be at a disadvantage due to unfamiliar, or less familiar, equipment.

So does anyone simply carry a duplicate of a knife they're comfortable doing anything they deem necessary with? (I know that on a knife enthusiast forum odds are people don't; odds are that people carry multiple types so they can have fun and play.)

Is there anyone who would? Or wouldn't? And if so why? Or are the differences between knives really so negligible that there isn't a need (a good edge is a good edge mentality)? Personally, I don't own any small knives aside from what's on my Swisstool and a small SAK and thus cannot really comment, but I'm rather curious...

I always have a SAK in my pocket but I dont see it as my backup. I dont really have one dedicated fixed blade to backup my Fox 691 maybe an Izula or Becker Necker or something.

This is the group that will go hiking with me Saturday. The Sierra saw is in the day pack. The SAK and the little skeleton blade will be on the pack, the smaller fixed blade (TobinSmith) goes in the pocket, the Spyderco is carried baldric style, and the larger knife ( by Tim Olt) fits on my belt.
Hey, they all have to get out of the safe for some exercise now and then. :D
