Which blade to serve as a backup blade?

Gotta go with a Becker BK-16 & a Leatherman Wave. Both are really dependable and are always in my bag or on my belt. I also keep a Mora in my bag but it almost never gets used.

My woods gear consists of at least a Busse in a SpecOps sheath with another smaller folder in the pouch. These days its either a smaller SAK or an Outdoor Edge Blaze. The SAK is of course handy, but I also really like the Blaze...a really nice, simple, inexpensive lockback folder with a grippy, EZ-to-find handle and good blade profile.

If I'm packing my versipak, there's also a multi-tool in there as well. And I might have something clipped to my pocket, as I have for the past 20+ years...

I always carry a traditional folder in my pocket, slipjoint or friction, it serves as my main[B/] blade with the medium sized belt knife (KA-BAR 1247 Warthog) serving as the do everything else blade. With a large/heavy pack knife.

Since I got it, I've been leaving my Svord Peasant folder strapped tithe outside of my pack as an "extra" knife.

But the Svords spot on pack is about to get swapped for a Laplande folding saw I have on order and I've also got a Mora 511 on the way.

So I'm not sure but that Svord might be getting booted off the pack completely with the mora taking it's spot on the inside and the saw on the outside.

For my kayak/camping trips I utilize two stainless Moras.. A companion thats used for everything and a clipper in my "mess kit" that's strictly food prep..

When I go hunting I keep a Buck 119 in my pack and a Buck 110 on my belt..

When I'm on vacation at the beach with my family I carry a Spyderco Pacific Salt and keep a small traditional in my pocket..(Either Buck or Case)..

When I take my family camping in our little pop-up trailer.. I usually carry a Spyderco Endura and a small traditional. (Case or Buck)..

Thinking about adding a Leatherman type tool on my kayak trips and hunting trips..CD

I have about 10 4-5" quaility main knives I rotate on my belt. My back-up in my day pack is my CPM154 Bravo 1 (no ramp, drop point). It wont rust so I do not have to worry about it getting wet and if I have broken my main knife I will need something I can trust. I cannot think how I would break my main knife (Survive GSO4.1 in CV3, RMD, HRLM, BATAK, etc.) but I might lose it. I also carry a Victornox OH trekker in an horizontal sheath on my belt always ( even to church).

I try to carry fixed blade into the woods- don't even want to think about cleaning the gunk trapped on the pivot
(unless it's ZT500).
Will have a Mora as backup, apart from the usual chopper, multitool and a folding saw.

Some good choices already; I'd lean towards something like a Victorinox Trekker.
Some very useful tools as well as a surprisingly decent blade.

I like the Vic. Trekker as well, it's my EDC and jobsite "go to" knife.
A while ago I found a kydex neck sheath for it.
Its as a perfect mate to my BK9.
I have a bright orange Mora in the side pocket of my Camelbak HAWG.

I have all my packs equipped with back-up blades: a Mora, SAK, and Fiskars saw. If I'm hiking without a pack or using a small daypack that isn't outfitted with back-up gear, I carry a SAK Farmer or OHT in addition to the fixed blade on my belt.

Jeez, I guess that I'm not the only one. My set ups are basicly the same. I carry my car keys on some para around my neck as it would be pretty hard to find them again in my wanderings. So now and then I will loop this cord through the bottom sheath hole and up through the hole on an Izula. It retains the knife and sheath and is easily removable by simply pulling the para out.

This is my do all back up

The other thing I sometimes carry as a back up is one of those folding knives that take box knife blades, and then I carry 2 or 3 extra blades.

If its a day hike, or an over night camp, I usually just carry my Vic Farmer, and either my BK-15 or my 710 Split as my larger knife. If I'm gonna be out longer, I take my BK-9 along also, on my pack.

In the woods I carry a combo of a 15" bowie, and a buck 192 if im feeling luck, punk. But I always have my trusty copperlock in my pocket, and a leatherman pst in the other pocket. Not to mention, a 1911 unless the situation dictates a different sidearm. Such as hunting with a blackhawk.

Large custom Joe Hoover chopper always in the pack. Smaller 5.5 inch OTK bowie on the hip. SAK or Swisstool somewhere on me as well. However, just purchased a nice hatchet from Wulf in Vermont and a small neck knife from Wolf Creek Forge so I imagine those will get worked in as well!!

uh, I don't see this as being much of a concern. Ya really oughta have a multitool out there, along with your skinning knife. Deer aint that big, in most areas. If you are hunting elk or moose, you've got a hatchet and game saw handy, too. So unless it's some sort of shtf end of the world thing, why would you need a "backup knife?" If it's shtf, the other cutting instument in my BOB is a sort of "lash on' arrowhead. The main use for it will be to lash on a spear and use it to quietly finish a cow that I've brought down with a field made bola, or which has been snared. But it's got a sort of half assed handle, and a better hilt can be arranged for it fairly easily.. So if my SOG blade gets broken, I do have a sort of backup, I guess. The multi-tool goes in a neck pouch, with the firestarter gear, so it's quite unlikely to be lost. If I walk off without it, the sheath bouncing on my chest reminds me to go back and get it.

I usualy have an izulaII and a svord peasant or a opinel
Not so much primarily for back up , but I prefer to have a clean knife for food use , and another I dont mind to get dirty .
Back up is secondary .. but its there regardless .
its always better to have another go to right there than to be making do with somehting that isnt up to the job , my experience .

I always have at least 1 Mora as a backup; for the weight and price theres no reason not to have at least one in your bag. I also carry a Folts Minimalist on my neck as a last resort knife. My new overnight woods team is going to be a backpacking saw (either Sven or Bahco, haven't decided) for larger logs, Ontario Ranger RBS 9 for chopping and batoning, and a Mora Companion for knife chores. All 3 items cost right at $100 combined, and total weight is only 27 ounces; so the whole package is cheaper and lighter than most large survival knives alone.
