Which Bladeforums discussions have had the greatest impact on shaping your knowledge of knives?

I can't talk about a specific discussion, but I've been reading here for a long time. The most useful discussions I've seen are those where people try to understand the other person's opinion and don't feel they have to be right. Unfortunately, as with everything, even knives, there are people who defend some things fanatically. If the subject is not scientific, but rather a matter of taste, then I think we should learn to welcome some things and enjoy the pleasure of talking to each other. I have a lot of respect for everyone who writes here, both because they are human beings and because we have a common passion. For this reason, any title that is opened up for the purpose of maintaining mutual respect and learning from each other is of great value to me. Knowledge grows when shared.

The Chris Reeve section of the forum.

Prior to that I hadn't really purchased/carried anything beyond a Spyderco or a Zero Tolerance; and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with those choices. I began looking at CRK's though as a "higher end" knife that had looks and begged to be used for work. CRK was my gateway drug to a "nicer" (i.e. more expensive) choice of knife; from there I fell down other rabbit holes - and I am very glad I did.

I did a considerable amount of arguing about steel as a teenager on Blade Forums before I started my Materials Science degrees. Cliff Stamp was always up for an argument. I learned some things about steel, edge geometry, etc. by having to argue various points. And how to argue on the internet without becoming a nut case.
I’m glad you mention Cliff Stamp. He sure deserves that.
Any discussion involving you, Cliff Stamp, Mete, me2, fortytwoblades, Scott Gossman, JPARANEE and a few others its always a pleasure to follow.

I learned that Tanto blades are too powerful for bananas.

Serious. Life. Changer.

Like everyone else, there are just too many to mention.

One that I haven't seen discussed above is Mecha Mecha . Either as a participant or a fly on the wall, his discussions regarding geometry, metallurgy and his pioneering work with titanium were always entertaining and informative.

Frankly, all WIP threads hosted by our makers are excellent talk. It's fun to talk through their process so openly.

I can honestly say the Umnumzaan Pic thread in the CRK forum forever changed / influenced my knife “ hobby”. It set in motion a now 6 + years long love affair with a knife I can not get out of my mind. I just purchased my 7th….after selling 6! It also cemented me as a CRK fanboy.
I had known and wanted a Zaan since discovering CRK when joining here the first time in 2015 but that thread starting in 2017 threw me for a loop! I have since read every thread and review of the knife I can scrounge from the interwebs. I know not the power the damn things holds over me only that I cannot resist it!!!!!!

I’d like to recognize myself for having enough sense to come here and read everything I can. :D:p seriously, the tinkering and maintenance forum has done wonders for my sharpening abilities and the thread in General about latest acquisitions has significantly lightened my wallet.

Too many lessons to post here, really. Maybe of special note are the following: I learned quite a bit about sharpening from Blues Blues , interestingly with a knife that I sold him that he had to return, because the HT was bad. I also always listen very carefully to Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist 's take on steels and knife making (for example his take on edge holding, powdered vs. ingot, etc.), and have had many enlightening exchanges with Paul CPE_Knives CPE_Knives . Generally, having this pool of outstanding makers here is the biggest attraction to BF for me. I came here in 2018, and started knife collecting 2 (?) years before, so I'm still pretty new to all this.

Mostly all the ones that opened my eyes to all the knives I didn't know I needed. My first post-Bladeforums knife was a Spyderco Centofante 3, for the princely sum of $55.

And also the gospel of the SMATCHET.
