I almost always have a folder on me and oftentimes a folder and a multi-tool.
If the day will be dedicated outdoor activities - I much prefer a fixed blade instead of the folder, along with a multi-tool.
When I say multi-tool I mean like Leatherman multi-tool; SAKs almost don't count as I darned near always have one of those with me.

My answer would have to be "Yes to the above." I use and carry all three.
Though I suppose if I had to, I could give up the fixed blade, since I carry and use those the least.

My EDC for the last "few" years has been a stockman and a SAK Huntsman or 4 blade Scout/Camp/Utility knife (and most days a third multi-blade traditional of a different pattern) in my right front pocket and a Buck 110 or Old Timer 7OT (or 6OT) on my belt. :)

Being a city boy, I have always carried folders. I had a fixed blade once, probably a gift. It's gone now, so I probably gave it to the first friend that asked me for it.

My folders are mostly Boker automatics with four inch blades.

I started this thread as an exercise to be honest with myself. Like most of you, I dont carry just one knife or tool. Life is too short not to pack what you might need;)

I just wanted to boil down to what tool is "me". Mines got pliers on it.

I think I have a foot in a couple of different camps here. I rarely go hunting or on a few days of camping anymore. When I did that, a medium folder and a substantial fixed blade was required.

But working in construction, I carry a couple of knives everyday. A large folder like my ZT O909, a CS Bush Ranger or something of that size. It must have a small clip so it is nearly undetectable when carrying it because I don't want anyone to notice that I have it. Those knives get all the heavy work. I also carry a smaller traditional folder for the lighter stuff.

Since I try to keep the big knife nasty sharp, I don't use the smaller knives that much.

I cannot imagine going to work without a larger folder now, but for about 30 years all I carried was a large Case Stockman or the large Case Cpperhead. Both worked great. But I like having a handful of knife for bigger jobs, so both those old timers don't see much pocket time anymore.

I prefer a fixed blade. I carry a knife half as a legitimate rescue tool and half because it's very useful for EDC tasks. I've never had to use it during a rescue. If I did, someone is probably half drowned already. It's most likely going to be complete chaos in worse than average conditions and possibly under moving water. I don't want to fiddle with moving parts.
As an EDC tool, I prefer a fixed blade but tolerate fully ambidextrous folder. I won't even consider a frame or liner lock for a righty.

Now don't try to make this overly complicated or convoluted.
But I LIKE making things overly complicated and convoluted
all those Macgyver episodes
I've got the complete set. I even watch 'em. Maybe Phenix Under Siege tonight. I've had that one on my mind lately and it takes place toward the end of Dec. with Mac's Grandpa Harry ! Those are some of my vave's.

anyway . . . yeah I'm a nerd . . .
I voted folder.
I just ordered two more folders; one yesterday and one today so I guess that proves it. Old Time style both : a Teardrop and a Doctor's knife. ;)
(thank you BladeForums for the advice)

turn screws, repair pumps, and hand fabricate little bobs and widgets to make things work that don't have replacement parts.
That's me ! (luckily I do it all at my work station and have lots of MTs stashed there  sooooo . . . there )
I have enough fancy task specific tools at the work station I can just get by without a MT . . . pretty much.
Couldn't make it without my super steel folder though. :(
At least tha's my story and I'm sticking by it.

I shave grown completely dependent on the pocket tool kit.
Now that's dedication to a multi tool indeed. Depending on it for shaving !
:)
MTs not sporting . . . glassy high performance actions on PB washers or bearings
Every time I close one of my extensive stable of SAKs . . . EVERY TIME . . . I appreciate the action and sound of it .
At least there is one thing in this world I can count on (the quality and consistency of a SAK).

Folder. I like fixed blade but must be exposed carry. I don’t want the attention that brings.

Folder because it's out of sight and out of mind. I really like fixed blades but where I live I kinda feel like they are a how teenagers say "Heat Score". These days every Grandma, snow flake, and worse snow flake grandmas can have melt downs at the sight of one. And sadly the same people have access to cell phones. Also I think many people automatically misjudge you if they see a knife on your belt.

I go for the fixed blades. Whether you consider variety, history, adventure, or serious use it all comes back to the fixed blade. Folders, are just those inconspicuous things that you carry in a polite society.

Other than for delicate tasks such as food prep and opening envelopes, my main criterion for a knife is how well it will perform when things are not normal, such as an emergency or survival situation. Folders, multi-tools, and small fixed blades have their place, and I have several, but in a worse-case scenario, which could happen at any time without warning, I want a big, tough, high-quality knife (around 10" blade, with a finger choil) that can do everything, from wood-chopping on down. Definitely a fixed blade for me!

I’ve carried two at once. Folder and multi-tool. I don’t like it. To much stuff around my waist.

Give me a folder and keep the MT
in my coat, gear bag, tool bag, BOB, etc. I own enough MTs to make that happen. They are within reach most of the time.

A fixed blade knife is not practical for me but, I will carry one if I feel I have a need and it is appropriate.

I find it interesting that most of you group multi tools and Swiss Army knives in the same category. I don’t do that. For me, a Swiss Army knife is just that, a knife. All the tools are secondary to the blade. A multi-tool is just the opposite.

SAK all the way. I've tried folders, traditionals, super steels and funky cool stuff and have come back to the simple, cheap, reliable SAK.

Rambler on the keychain, Spartan or Camper on the belt and a Waiter for suit carry. End of story.

Folder here.

But if I were retired and no longer interacting with the public at work, I'd wear me a fixed.
