Which color combo do you consider the most subdued?

Khaki and Od green. In a camo sense blending in to more surroundings anyways. Anything with Black, especially a lot of it, is going to stick out big time. Especially with NV, to critters with sensitive rod cells, or even those of us that are light sensitive who see well in low light.

I think he meant the absence of light. Think imploded star or black hole.
 
OK. I come from a family of artists and since we aren't supposed to ask questions I will make some presumptions about this very exciting thread. Black is, oddly enough, a terrible color. There is almost no black in nature and thus it doesn't blend in well. And the eye is geared up to see contrast and nothing contrasts more than black.

OD green...not as good as you'd think either. It does blend in well with healthy, well watered foliage but Olive Drab is not as drab from the color theory perspective as you'd think. It is a fairly warm color with a lot of yellow pigment in it. Again, the eye is pretty well adept at sensing warm and cool colors and in the case of green, there are a lot of green foods and thus the human eye is pretty good at seeing green.

What you want in a subdued color schemes are colors that are neither warm nor cool. That is where your Flat Dark Earth, Slate Gray, Khaki, and whatnot come in.

The traditional function of camoflage has always been twofold: 1) blend in to the background and, 2) break up the outline. The new digital camos and color theory now provide a third dimension and that is to use color schemes that are not easily detected by the optical mechanics of the human eye and the software in the brain that interprets what it sees.

So my vote of khaki and brown reflects that direction. Had I the option, shades of very neutral gray along with very neutral khaki colors would have been my choice.

Very interesting subject.

I think Khaki and brown would be awesome. In my opinion the most subdued combination in most wild environs day and night. The Khaki RC 4C would have just disappeard laying on the ground here pretty much all year round with brown scales. Probably awsome in a desert environment too.
